Handgun Transfer

Hello everyone,

My father lives in Alabama and has a handgun that he would like to gift to me. I live in PA. Is there any process we need to go through to have the handgun transferred? Will this fall under both Alabama and PA laws?

You need to find a local FFL to have the gun shipped to. When it arrives, you will go there, fill out the federal and state paperwork and undergo the background check. If all is ok, you will walk out with the gun.

If the PA FFL will accept a shipment from a non-FFL, then your father can ship it to the PA FFL via UPS or FedEx. If the PA FFL will not accept a shipment from a non-FFL, then your father will need to find a FFL in AL to ship the handgun to the PA FFL. In many cases it is actually cheaper to have the handgun shipped from FFL to FFL because FFL's can use USPS to ship handguns to each other. This way is cheaper because when using UPS or FedEx the gun has to go overnight (per UPS and FedEx internal rules) at a much higher cost.

Is this mandatory? I bought a gun recently from an individual in IA who sent it directly to my FFL via UPS Ground.

The "next day air" shipment requirement applies only to handguns (as defined by 18 U.S.C. § 921).
