    Default Handgun Transfer

If I wanted to buy a handgun through a private sale, could the transfer be done at the sheriff's office, or only through an FFL?

    Thanks

Transfer CAN be done at a sheriff's office per the law. But many sheriff's refuse to "offer that service".

That's too bad, I was hoping to save $25 or whatever it costs to transfer the gun. Do both parties have to be present to do the transfer?

    Thanks.

Yes. The law stipulates that the parties and FFL be "in the presence of each other".
The seller CAN drop off at the FFL ahead/diff time than the buyer though if the FFL accommodates that.

    Save?

The Sheriff transfers I did still cost a few bucks. I think the other guy paid $10-15 for the transfer and background check.

The handgun can be dropped off at the FFL who is going to do the transfer at any time. The person buying the handgun can pick it up at any time (typically this is coordinated with the FFL, especially if that is when the money for the gun is to change hands). The FFL will get the sellers info (for his bound book) and then do the background check on the buyer. If buyer passes he pays the FFL for the transfer and walks out with his new handgun.

Here in Pa you should get your copy of the 4473. the FFL usually gives you a bill of sale. other than that you need nothing. Take it home and give it lots of TLC

Buyer does not get a copy of the 4473, there is only one copy and it stays with the FFL. In PA, the buyer gets a copy of the Application/Record of Sale (the PSP form) and any receipts needed. If you bought it over the internet and paid for it in advance, the FFL should give you the paperwork from the place you bought it. If you ordered it through a FFL and he ordered it, he would give you a receipt when you paid for it.

BTW, didn't you post this in another thread?
