Opinions on 9MM AR's
My next gun will be a 9MM rifle. I am thinking AR platform or potentially MP5. Any thoughts you guys have on good makers of 9MM AR's? Looks like the options are Colt, RRA, Olympic, and Bushmaster for the AR's.
Thanks in advance for your experiences.VEGETARIAN: Native American word meaning "bad hunter"

Re: Opinions on 9MM AR's
I have both the MP5 and (2) 9mm AR's
Both ARs are *mostly* RRA parts as I built them from stripped lowers.
There are two basic styles Colt (used by RRA delton, Bushmaster..ect) and Olympic. Neither styles will interchange parts. The colt system uses Colt SMG or UZI mags and the ejector is built into the magblock. The olympic system used modified sten mags and no mag block (from the factory a block is welded to the mags, there are sten blocks availible however to allow unmodified sten mags to be used) the ejector is inside the upper receiver.

Re: Opinions on 9MM AR's
That is quite a collection you have there. I am almost scared to meet you on 3/9!
So if you could only have one, would you keep the MP5 or 9MM AR? I plan to use the rifle for IPSC.VEGETARIAN: Native American word meaning "bad hunter"

Re: Opinions on 9MM AR's
Mtdew covered it all.
I have a 9mm AR and absolutely love it! It's accurate as hell, reliable, and fun to shoot.
RRA 9mm uppers are good, as are colt. You can use whichever lower you like, and you also need a mag block and 9mm buffer.

Re: Opinions on 9MM AR's
I actually met and talked to you before..lol
Between the two (assuming you dont SBR either one) i'd go with the AR over the MP5. The (16") AR has better sight radius.
Now if you were to SBR either then it's a little closer. The downside to the MP5 is the cost of parts. A collapsible stock for it is around $400. I paid $49 each for the MP5 mags vs $13 for Uzi mags I also had to add about 150 in genuine HK parts to get the MP5 to run @100% (it's a clone.) you are also stuck w/ the factory HK sights unless you mount a optic (which requires a special mount) that may or may not be a issue for you.
The upside to the MP5 is it's noticeably more quiet suppressed (probably not a issue for you)
If I could only get one i'd get the AR. It does all but one thing as well as a MP5 and costs considerably less to buy and customize. No, not billet martini glasses... Baffles.... EVIL Baffles

Re: Opinions on 9MM AR's
If you don't want the hassle of SBR and the $200, build the pistol. It's as fun..or more fun than any ar (w/stock) to shoot. I've got two right now (5.56 with 10.5" upper and 9mm with 9" upper), and have two more pistol lowers (ones on the way, the other in my possession) that will be much shorter barrels, probably a 5" 9mm upper and a 7" 5.56 upper.
The great thing about going with a pistol is you can retain the "sbr" length uppers, and when you are ready to SBR it/add a stock, you can turn your pistol lower in to the NFA item. Eventually I'll get around to it!

I had been thinking the same thing... and then I shot a Beretta CX4.
I still want a few more ARs, but the CX is the next rifle for me.
Doug (The PAFOA V.P.) was selling one afew days ago. $1000 and it already had the side / upper rails, EOTECH site and some other goodies. If my tax return were back, I'd have probably taken it off his hands.Last edited by Skullz; February 25th, 2008 at 09:25 PM.

Re: Opinions on 9MM AR's
Hello,
I have both MP5 clone and 9mm AR.
For the coolness factor the MP5 wins hands down. But that's it. They are expensive. Mags, extra parts to make it run well, accesories etc. are 2-3X's as much as AR parts. My SW-5 is a $1600 parts bin.
Go with the AR unless you can afford a real HK 94 and SBR it.
