Yearly company training class
I had my annual company firearms qualification class this past weekend, some of the things we were told in the classroom.
You have a 70% chance of survival from a gunshot wound.
You have a 10% chance of survival from a knife wound.
If someone has a knife and they are about 23 feet away from you, draw your weapon, if they get within 21 feet start shooting, because you are going to get cut.
You can't match a bullet fired from a Glock to its barrel.

Re: Yearly company training class
OK on the Glock thing, I found this:
http://www.nij.gov/training/firearms...m10_t09_01.htm
Polygonal rifling prohibits the examiner from measuring the width of land and groove impressions because the lands and grooves have a rounded profile instead of a well-defined rectangular profile.
Polygonal rifling is most frequently observed in firearms marketed by Glock and Heckler & Koch. In the FBI GRC file, the land and groove widths for these firearms are listed as 0.000.

Re: Yearly company training class
The statistic I've always heard from medical sources is as follows:
70% of people shot with a handgun survive.
70% of people shot with a rifle do not survive.
Reason is that rifles do much more damage and the survival success rate for handgun shootings is due to the fact that EMT and E-Room expertise has greatly improved. This is due in part to the experience gained from urban street violence. IOW, many ER doctors have become very experienced at treating gunshot wounds.
After having been shot with a handgun, if the EMT's can get you to the ER alive, your chances of surviving are very good.
You have a 10% chance of survival from a knife wound.
If someone has a knife and they are about 23 feet away from you, draw your weapon, if they get within 21 feet start shooting, because you are going to get cut.

If it comes down between a knife or a gun fight I'd rather be in a gun fight bullets can only hit what they are aimed at and typically once shots start going off accuaracy decreases unless the person is highly trained. A knife on the other hand can be swung wildly and if it hits the right spot you'll bleed out very quickly.

Re: Yearly company training class
I'm right there with you. I would much prefer a gunfight to a knife fight any day.
Someone who knows what they are doing with a knife can seriously mess you up in very little time and with almost no warning. While a bullet can be fatal, it is a lot harder to paralyze someone by taking out tendons/etc. with a gun. It's a lot easier (I'm not saying its easy, just easier) to do with a knife. You also make a good point that in the hands of someone without training a knife can be a lot more deadly than a firearm.
Also, as far as I know, there is no way to disarm a person with a knife without very likely being cut. I can disarm someone without being shot.

Re: Yearly company training class
I don't want to be in a gun or knife fight. I would rather have a gun no matter what the other guy has. I just hope I see what is comming before it happens. That part I can control at least a little.
Some people just plain suck.
