Modified semi-auto for hunting (legally)
So I am curious as to whether I could use my AK (Wasr) to legally hunt game in PA, if I modified that action so that it is no longer semi-auto; but I would not want it to be permanent, something I could return back to normal upon arriving home.
I was thinking I could simply buy a new bolt carrier and cut off the piston, and/or possibly work with the gas tube a little to figure out a "fix". Does anybody have any suggestions on how this could all be done, has anyone done anything similiar?
Thanks all

any fix you make should require tools to remove and restore to original function. can't cut off the gas piston or the carrier won't track right. a heavily vented piston would be a "drop-in".

Seems like you'd potentially be inviting a lot of unnecessary attention on yourself. Plus, what round would you use? Are you a good shot under pressure, in the brush or woods, or bad weather to use a light grain bullet that could just maim a deer that you may end up tracking for hours and hours?

I would have to disagree with the individual above. Most of my family hunts with .223's and I have seen this caliber drop a deer in it's tracks. You should know this caliber is actually designed for varmit hunting.

Re: Modified semi-auto for hunting (legally)
My AK is 7.62x39, so I have no doubt that the .30 caliber round could drop a deer
But, back on topic; how do I go about making this rifle legal for hunting purposes? What can do done to disable the semi-auto action?

You can get a decent hunting rifle or slug gun for a very reasonable price. It might be easier to get one than to modify your AK.
Even if you can make the AK legal to hunt with, it will draw attention to you. Anytime and every time a CO sees you hunting with it they will investigate further.

Re: Modified semi-auto for hunting (legally)
I was told by a warden abut my AR that the gas hole in the barrel would have to be welded or something permanent to keep it from cycling to make it manual operation. I called. If i were you i would too, hear it from the horses mouth.

Re: Modified semi-auto for hunting (legally)
This is just my opinion, but if I read the Hunting Regs:
"Unlawful Firearms & Devices: 1) Automatic and semi-automatic
(autoloading) rifles and handguns; 2) air or gas operated rifles and
handguns."
The AK is a semi. Period. You modify it, so what? You state you want to be able to modify it back. Would you do that in the field? If I was a WCO, I'd call BS. Sounds like a fine waiting to happen. Where do you plan to hunt so I can stay clear away?!

There's the info. You do what you got to do.Last edited by CL3; June 15th, 2012 at 10:07 PM.

Re: Modified semi-auto for hunting (legally)
If you wanted to hunt with an AK Id build one from scratch with no gas hole in the barrel and make it a pump action. or take your semi auto to a state that allows them. just my 2 cents
