Depends whether you're buying from an FFL or a private individual. If an individual same as if you bought something from Aubie. Otherwise the same as buying from a store.

pretty much the same, but it's only one sheet that you have to fill out.

to be clear, does this mean that when buying a rifle from a private individual, no paperwork is needed? Even say for a AR15?

That is correct. No transfer is necessary for a private sale, trade or gift of a long arm(rifle/shotgun) in Pennsylvania.

However, I do recommend a sales receipt be made between the parties.

If so, then why the sales receipt?

However, if your buying a rifle from an individual that YOU DO NOT KNOW THAT WELL, have the serial number checked!

It's just a CYA if it is ever needed and proves payment was recieved and you are the rightful owner should a legal matter ever arise.

Sorry to be a pest but....

How does one does one check the serial number?

Also, if it is legal to buy from a private individual without ANY paperwork what sort of legal matters can come up?

It has happened before that a person had sold a firearm to another person, then reported the firearm stolen. ...with knowledge of who "took" it. That person was then convicted of theft and firearm violations.

If I can come across the link, I will post it.

There are other similar reasons too. It would also help your case that you unknowingly purchased a stolen firearm if it were to be one. ..That your ownership was thought to be a lawful transfer on your part.
