    Default PRACTICAL RIFLE

The enrollment deadline for Practical Rifle is only three weeks away.

Of all the courses I have taken, I think this one has the most practical utility. The course is about functioning with a specific rifle, and involves all important aspects of the shooting arts. One who can shoot a bolt gun well can adapt that knowledge to any other platform with ease.

One learns a lot in three days. My observation is that when it is over course partiicpants consistently report they never really knew thier rifle, even rifles they have had for years. This course will either cause you to fall in love with your rifle for life, or send you off looking for a better one.

The course flyer is reproduced below. All enrollments are being handled directly by Cumberland Tactics: www.guntactics.com A link to the Cumberland Tactics Enrollment form is also at www.fireinstitute.org, under the "practical rifle" tab.

IF YOU COULD HAVE JUST ONE RIFLE FOR EVERYTHING…
    “PRACTICAL RIFLE”
FRIDAY, July 27 through SUNDAY, July 29, 2012

Randy Cain will be at the Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsman’s Club giving his well-known course on the use of “that one gun.”
The course is for any bolt-action, lever-action or pump-action rifle.

When talk turns to “if you could only have one gun …”, most people look to either a shotgun or their bolt or lever gun. For those who love rifles, this is an opportunity to really be put through the paces by a professional. The course includes 24 hours of formal instruction on the use of bolt or lever-action rifles, including practical marksmanship at practical distances (5 to 300 yards), and the use of for personal defense when repeated, quick shots may be necessary. Randy covers and shows how these guns were designed to be operated under field conditions, and how to keep them running. If you like shooting, it is a lot of fun.

This course is suitable for the person who wishes to utilize the rifle as a defensive tool, as well as the hunter or recreational shooter. The tactical drills in this course fall into line with the 'tactical rifle' or 'urban carbine' type courses for magazine fed rifles which are so popular, but in this course they are negotiated with a bolt action or lever gun. This exercise will give the student the confidence that comes with a superior level of gun-handling and manipulation skills.

While it may seem odd in this age of lightweight auto-loading rifles, it may be that we won’t always have access to AR-15’s, AK-clones and M-1’s. Many believe “hunting rifles” will be among the last to be officially restricted. But even if that never happens, the fact is one cannot carry every gun he owns in an emergency. You will most probably have to pick just one …

Location: This course will be held at the Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen’s Club, in North Versailles Twp.

Cost: $495. Includes instruction, range fees, targets, range supplies and written materials. Students to provide their own ammunition, personal gear and meals. (There is a snack bar at the range.)

Course format: Lectures (approximately 2 hrs.), and live-fire exercises (approximately 22 hrs.). There will be one night shoot, on the evening of the second day. The course is best suited to lightweight, fast handling rifles with iron sights or low power scopes. There is, however, no restriction on the type of rifle a student may use.

    Ammunition Requirement: 500 Rounds.

Instructor: Randy Cain is the Director of Cumberland Tactics, Inc., a professional shooting school providing mobile training throughout the United States. He has nearly two decades of professional firearms training experience. He holds a very rare "Instructor Certification" with Yavapai Firearms Academy (Louis Awerbuck) where he served as class coordinator for 10 years. He has also been a Rangemaster at the prestigious Gunsite Academy in Arizona, and a member of the National Training Team with Operational Skills Group. Mr. Cain is a registered NRA Police Firearms Instructor, and has served both as a police officer and as a police SWAT team member and Training Officer.

Prerequisites: None. It is, however, expected students will have a basic familiarity with firearms.

Enrollment: Enrollment will be open until 30 days before the course date. If we have at least eight students by then, and the course is not actually full, enrollment will be extended until the course fills or until the day of the course. All tuition becomes non-refundable after the 30-day cutoff date. If the course is cancelled for any reason, all tuition on deposit will be immediately refunded. Enrollment is through the Cumberland Tactics web site: www.guntactics.com

Instructor to Student Ratio: There will not be more than 14 students in this class, so there will be sufficient time to deal with individual problems or questions as they arise. One need not worry about being one among dozens.

For Details, Directions, Equipment Requirements and Enrollment Materials, go to www.guntactics.com, or e-mail Randy Cain directly: RandyCain@centerfire.net

Last day to enroll is June 27, 2010, unless the course fills sooner.

    EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

There is certain equipment which is REQUIRED in this course. One may not proceed without the following:

    · Ear protection and Eye protection. Eye protection must be clear if there is a night shoot.
    · Cap or hat with baseball-style bill. This is to prevent ejected brass from your or another shooter's rifle from falling between your eyewear and your eye, burning you. It is important gear.
    · Bolt, lever or pump-action rifle, clean and zeroed.
    · At least two magazines (for magazine fed models). We prefer you have three, in case one malfunctions.
    · Knee and elbow pads. The inexpensive kind worn by skateboarders or carpet layers are sufficient.
    · Magazine holster or pouch which is worn on your belt, on your support ("weak hand") side. BDU pockets and M-16 pouches will get you through, but do not work very well.
    · 500 Rounds of "Ball" Ammunition. We recommend students use one brand of ammunition throughout the course. Different brands and loads of ammunition will significantly affect the “zero” of a rifle, which may be distracting or confusing in a course such as this. We also suggest students avoid the very cheapest ammunition and reloads. While “match grade” ammunition is unnecessary (and would be a waste of money), your investment of time and money in this course does justify the use of reasonably consistent ammunition. No incendiary, tracer or armor-piercing rounds are permitted.
    · A carry strap ("sling"). We run a “hot” range, and rifles must be slung unless they are racked, grounded or in the shooter's hand on line. Any strap or sling which allows the rifle to be carried muzzle up or muzzle down is fine. No slings which hold the muzzle in a horizontal position while being carried are permitted.
    · A ground cloth, shooting mat or other ground cover (such as an old blanket), to cover the ground or concrete shooting pads upon which you will be periodically sitting or lying.

Expect to shoot a lot, meet other shooters, get dirty and have a lot of fun.

Five days to go before we have to cut off enrollment. It's a very good course for anyone who wants to handle any kind of rifle ... including auto-loading carbines. Hate to miss this one.
