$600 is a great price if it is in original condition, i.e. not refinished, not mismatched... caveat emptor!

possibly buying. a 1911. a colt is the very first pistol i shot and although i am not overly enamored with the high end custom 1911's i do feel the need to have an original govt. issue 1911 in my collection.

If it's truly all original - parts and finish - and even with a shot-out barrel and thin/average finish, it's worth twice that price so "fair" is a matter of opinion I suppose. If it's a gun shop asking that price, grab it. If it's a friend, you might pony up a bit more.

Original condition WWII vintage 1911A1s are steadily climbing in price. I just watched a run-of-the-mill late war Remington Rand sell on Gunbroker last night for $1600 shipped.

ithaca only made the a1's, during the second ww.
only makers of the 1911 during ww1 were colt, springfield and a handful of remingtons.

as for price. it's only fair if you're not buying from a friend or acquaintance.

Actually, during WWI North American Arms in Quebec made about 100 1911's but they were never shipped.
The made them, they were just never used.

Not trying to split hairs, but they are technically wartime production.
