carefully, trust me. You don't want to be on the other end of that spring if it gets loose.

Field strip tends to be the same across all brands

IMO the only time you "field strip" a 1911 is to re-lube it every few weeks. If i shoot mine its a total strip down, clean/lube, and assemble. There are some great vids on YouTube of the total strip and assembly. You will want to hit brownells for a "block" and the cool multi screwdriver/punch with the hollow storage handle. 10-8 Performance has a great nylon tool for the 1911 that helps pry off the thumb safety without ducking up your finish.

The 1911 is a gun of end user dedication.... welcome to the club!!!!

Congrats, you are going to love that 1911 design , very thin and feels much lighter in the hand than it actually is.

You Tube is your friend for info, and do yourself a favor and buy a real Gunsmith screwdriver set this way you wont scratch up your gun and screws, i got the B-square set at Dicks for about $23, but i see Walmart has them now for about $20.00 .

    Happy shooting.

If you are going to get into 1911s and start detail stripping them. There a some tools you will want to have:

You will want a nice driver kit:

    http://www.chapmanmfg.com/MasterKit.html

You will want one of these (reinstalling the thumb safety and removing the extractor)

    http://www.10-8performance.com/produ...orer-Tool.html

You will also want a nice set of brass punches:

and a small rubber and plastic headed hammer:

If you aren't going to get into detail stripping the frame and slide but only field stripping I would just start with a bushing wrench if one didn't come with the pistol.

Here is an excellent detailed cleaning vid.
