You will want one of these (reinstalling the thumb safety and removing the extractor)

You will also want a nice set of brass punches:

and a small rubber and plastic headed hammer:

If you aren't going to get into detail stripping the frame and slide but only field stripping I would just start with a bushing wrench if one didn't come with the pistol.

Here is an excellent detailed cleaning vid.

wow, sounds like a hell of alot of maintenance for a pistol...im coming from a USP, just point and shoot, if you wanna clean it go ahead, if you dont, the gun runs just as well....im thinking about returning it already

Not at all, those are just the things I've accumulated and found useful for breaking them down into their individual parts. If you are only field stripping them you don't even need a bushing wrench if you don't want it. However, if you want to truly break one down, these puppies are truly useful.

get an idiot scratch prevention tool, trust me if this is your first 1911 get it before you tear it down. unless your very careful learning to do it properly, you WILL learn new cuss words when it happens, i know i did and i know alot of others that did as well. at least know what the idiot scratch is before taking it down, search google images or you tube.

No worries. Just apply some good gun grease on the slide and receiver rails. A good grease works wonders.

I've gone several range trips without additional cleaning or lubricant, I use Tetra Gun Grease. I like it because it stays put, works very well, and doesn't ruin your clothes.

The "idiot" scratch is produced when someone carelessly replaces the slide lock, allowing it to rub a semi circle scratch on surface of the frame in the process. It's a cosmetic issue that's easy to avoid. Some people use a piece of paper or a credit card, but you don't really have to use anything. I never do, just be careful.

"X is what percentage of Y?" Divide the first number by the second, multiply the answer by 100. Add a percent sign. Think.

Congrats on the purchase! A 1911 is always must have on one's gun collection. Nice gun to shoot - nice ergo and accurate. I field stripping is a cinch - kudos to the people who included videos on their post.

    The 1911 or the USP?

They are similar to the marks on your bumper when you are learning how to drive.

They are just scratches you put on your gun when you use the wrong tools or slip with the right tools when taking your gun apart. They are commonly accompanied with some profanity.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Do yourself a favor and do NOT return that gun. I have the same exact model and it is an awesome shooter and a fantastic pistol. With the fit and finish and all the options it comes with, it is the best deal going in 1911s. I'm glad someone else on here finally got one, just shoot the heck out of it and report back with your findings... Good buy buddy!
