I dont think the question is the legality of the issue, but wether it is stupid to do so.

I would not walk around on the "streets" with an unloaded shotgun as much as I would not carry a BB Gun for protection for many reasons that I should not have to get into.

Maybe you can clarify your question a bit more?

Actually, there is no prohibition to openly carry a LOADED shotgun or rifle. Would you get the attention of John Q. Law? Most certainly. This is no different than the issue of open carry of a handgun.

If it is legal, it certainly wouldn't be smart.

    Trivia question:

Q: Without using doughnuts, how do you attract a large group of police officers very quickly?

A: Walk down a city streeet with any kind of gun in plain sight.

Philadelphia is the only "first class" city in PA. I believe what makes a city first class is it needs to have 10,000+ residents. I might be mistaken though.

EDIT: not 10,000... 1,000,000 or more. First class = 1,000,000+, second class = 250,000 - 999,999, third class = 249,999 and lower. There's also a "second class A" which is 80,000 - 249,999, these are basically third class cities that elect by ordinance to be classified as a "second class A" city.

growing up (in st. marys, not pittsburgh) i used to walk down the street with shotguns and rifles all the time on my way to hunt.

    nobody ever looked twice.

ETA: every now and then, when i am feeling particularly ticked about some gun control issue, i get the hankering to go walking around pittsburgh with an AR-15 slung over my shoulder...so far, good sense has always returned before i actually do it, but one of these days i just might...that would be a real hoot. (i'm not ever really going to do this...but sometimes i am tempted.)

The license to carry firearms only pertains to pistols.

Long guns are to be in cases in public.

Please cite the statute that says this, I'm fairly sure you won't find one but if I've missed something I will need to update my open carry page.
