    Default Auto ordnance 1911 sights

I have an early 90's model 1911 auto ordnance. can I change the sights myself? I am not a gunsmith.

You can do it, the question is do you have the time/tools/confidence? If you are starting from scratch, cheaper to have it done. If you want to do it and don't mind if you screw up at first, you can get the tools and the knowledge.

You will need a special tool to remove and re-stake the front sight.

This is the item from Brownells:

    http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=9...T-SIGHT-STAKER

That tool will remove the issue front sight, and replace it with another unit.

To remove the rear sight a brass hammer and a nylon drift punch is needed.

I highly recommend a padded vice to mount the slide into before doing this job.

It can be done if you have the confidence and the patience.

Just go slowly and it will come out fine.

If you are not so inclined call around for a gunsmith that has experience in working on 'old school' 1911's. Their cost for the job, less the sights, may be less that buying the tools needed for what may become a single use item.

    Good luck
    gotta love her ;)
