Cleaning old shotguns. > 75 year old Stevens 520
So the shell lifter in my Stevens has be progressively been getting weaker and weaker. I decided to strip the gun down and diagnose the problem.
It appears that she's never been cleaned. The action was still buttery smooth though. :/
So I was looking for a cleaner that I could spray into all the crevasses that would not strip the patina off of. Any ideas?
Should be fun putting this sack of parts back together.
Thanks guys!
Edit: soaked everything in carb cleaner and took a tooth brush to all the crevasses. I didn't dare to start removing pins and springs. Just a good scrubbing and blowing with compressed air. What I thought was rust built up in the reciever was actually just compacted grime that came right out. Got it all back together and oiled, she's buttery smooth again and slam firing like a champ.
