Default Single Action Revolvers, is it ok to...

dry fire them? I was under the impression that it was not, that it would damage something. Am I wrong? I just picked up an Italian clone of a Colt second generation SAA, and I would like to practice with it. It has a solid firing pin, no transfer bar, if that matters.

it should not hurt it. however the oem bolt spring in them is pretty crappy, and has a very limited number of trigger pulls in its lifetime. it is easy enough to replace though.
it's only metal, we can out think it....

So long as it isn't rimfire you should be ok. Just check the manufacturer's site or manual for whatever they suggest.

It's not rimfire, it's .44-40. It's an ASM (Armi San Marcos) imported by EMF, however, ASM is out of business, and I don't have a manual for it. From what I understand, it is a verry close clone to the Colt SAA.

I was watching some youtube videos last night and in one, the guy mentioned dry firing, which I thought was bad. Apparently not though. Thanks for the help.

This is why i keep the empties. They're cheaper than snap caps and limit firing pin travel. Go fire a cylinder or two and keep the empties.

On a Colt style SAA hammer, you don't want to do dry-fire excercises without using a snap-cap. It will work, but with the firing pin on hammer design, you'll end up damaging your firing pin. If you had a SAA with a transfer-bar type firing pin, you would be good to dry-fire all day.

What Kiski said. The problem is there is not sufficient limit on the travel, so without ammo or a snap cap the firing pin will hammer against the anvil. It will slowly peen over. Not good.
