    Default AR10 or SA M1A?

Thinking about adding a .30 cal semi to my collection. I'm debating between an AR10 and a Springfield Armory M1A. Would be used for 200 - 400 M target shooting, scoped. It'd be looking at 18" - 22" barrel. Any thoughts on which way to go?

I would go with the m1a just because I have a few AR's. Really like the looks of them!

Well , I have both , an older Springfield M-1A and a few year old DPMS LR-308. Unless ya get a match grade , or are really lucky and get an older standard with all USGI parts that really shoots , yer looking at 1300-1500 or even more.

I'd say the LR-308 is just as accurate , more comfortable to shoot , easier to maintain and cheaper to buy (under a grand) and keep. Plus mounting a scope is a snap.

m1a.....because it is a improvement of the best battle rifle in us military history.
also because theres nothing unique about having another ar.

    I recommend a DPMS LR 308 24 " Stainless steel bull barrel.

Id go with the AR 10 platform. Much more versatile and from what I hear, they are a little more accurate

This is a good question, and both "answers" are great. The M1A is a great gun with the issue sights, a friend of mine has one and is a great shot with it. I have a DPMS 308 and it is excellent, accurate and familiar to me because of its similarity to my AR 15s. I would say if you are going to scope it the AR is better, the rail is so easy to mount a scope on it is a deal maker. Still the M1A comes with perfectly usable sites and just has that killer look and feel.

I went with this, slightly over 1K.

Yes and no, and no and yes.. Both tha Ar10 and the M1a are hard to beat. The M1a is old school and feels like a "real rifle" It is made like a brick outhouse, if bad goes to worse it can be used like a club. The not so good about an M1a is that it must be cleaned from the muzzle and it does not lend itself to scope mounting. The AR10 is ,well, an ar. The only thing I can say about both is that the shorter barrel versions of each version do not do justice for the 308 cartarige. The shorter barrels will give you a lot of fire and noise with a loss of velocity and accuracy. There is no free lunch. If you need a small light firearm get a small light firearm. Thats why the AR and the 223 were made in the first place.

Having faced this decision myself I opted for the M1A. I don't use an optic and shoot irons. Not to say I wont go with an optic in the future but for now Irons are plenty accurate. I also would look into a DPMS LR-308 Bull Barrel. If you plan on shooting using an optic the DPMS is most definately easier to scope.

Both are good rifles and both should serve you well.

Eventually I too will end up with a DPMS but now I am playing with my Super Vepr.. so thats gonna have to wait.
