    Default Modern 7.62x25

Looking for any feedback on why I should not build a modern 7.62x25. The more I read about the round, and the more I shoot my Tokarev's - I really want to put together a "modern" 7.62x25. I want it for fun, not for primary carry, or anything else other than fun. My plans are to pick up one of those black Taurus 1911 38 Supers - you know the flashy one with gold trim for $399 new - then buy the 7.62x25 conversion kit ( barrel, bushing, etc. ) for $189 and have my self a new toy. My only concern has been I have tried to load 7.62x25 in some of my current 38 Super magazines, and they are a bit tight ?? The company selling the conversion kit say they have a 38 Super magazine for $15 that works perfectly, so maybe I'd pick that up with the kit? Besides someone just not liking the 7.62x25 - anything you can think of that would change my mind of doing ?

do it! what part of the 7.62 fits tight in the .38 super mag? the length of the cartridge? it is 1.5mm longer.

Yes, the lenght. It is very tight. Hopefully, when I decide to order everything, and I get the magazine they recommend, it is a good fit.

How many Tok's can you fit into one of those .38 Super mags? The only issue other than mag capacity is I hear some gunsmithing is required to get the conversion to work, it's not a simple swap of a barrel. I believe Cheaper than Dirt or one of the major websites offer to install the barrel. It's something I want to do someday to a cheap RIA since like you I love the Tokarev round.

upon more research, it looks like people are only getting 4-6 rounds in the recommended .38 super mags. not good.

if you had a 9mm largo, or a 9x23, well then.......but that would defeat your purpose of a modern 1911 in 7.62x25.

if you have a file, lots of time, and 2mm to spare inside the mag, then maybe you could go somewhere with this, but otherwise it looks kinda bleak.

I've been wishing that Glock or HK would build a single stack, 4" barreled, slim frame double action pistol in 7.62 x 25 for years now. I also wish Sig would convert a P239 or a P225 for the Tokarev round too.

I would love to see CZ make a modern, double stacked, striker fired Tokarev pistol. Such a pistol with the cheap but potent surplus ammo has win written all over it.

Here's what J&G says about the conversion kit :

This is an exclusive J&G Sales custom barrel conversion kit that will change a Government model 1911 in 9mm or 38 Super to use 7.62x25 ammunition. This kit comes with a custom 5 inch stainless steel barrel, link, pin, and bushing.

The requirements for the conversion are as follows: Your 9mm or 38Super Government model 1911 must have a non-ramped frame (such as Colt, Rock Island, Taurus) and also requires the use of a 38Super magazine, which will accept 4-8 rounds of surplus or commercial ammunition. The barrel and bushings may require minimal fitting. Does not work on 45ACP guns.

I was able to get 6 rounds into my RIA 38 Super mags, but it wasn't easy. I can live with 6 or 7 rounds if they go in fairly easy, but not 4. hmmmmm, I'm torn ! How about you guys all send me $20 and I'll be the guinea pig

I think that would be a very cool project.

    Do it!

Edit: Hmm, the mag capacity thing is concerning. Buy a Five SeveN instead. LOL...

I knew you wouldn't be able to resist a good 7.62x25 thread/question - lol. Five SeveN huh, never knew you liked them - double lol
I'll let everyone know if I go for it - I am very tempted. Of course, I just bought another old lemon squeezer (32) tonight so I blew some more money after just picking up a lemon squeezer (38) and Beretta Tomcat, and a S&W 64-3 in the past week!
