    Default Engraving an SBS

I will be getting the paperwork together here in about a week to do my SBS. I know that I have to have my name, city and state engraved on the receiver.

I'm not sure where to have the engraving done. I'd like to do it locally so I don't have to ship my receiver out.

I was thinking of talking to the manager at Things Remembered in the mall to see if he would do it if I completely strip the receiver down to a hollow hunk of aluminum.

Does anyone know of a place local to me to get this done instead of the mall? Any idea what it might cost?

Just look in the yellowpages for a trophy/engraving shop. I doubt things remembered will actually agree to do it.

Anything You make needs your info on it, SBS,SBR,AOW,can.

only counts where it's made, no change.
So when you made it it reads:

    I. Sofa
    Kingwetodd, ID

for moving, you need a 5320.20
My last one took 3 days turnaround after I mailed it out .

IF , you're keeping it . SInce resale on any SBS/SBR really aint worth it why not do it yourself?

I've done all mine myself with a dremel, wrote it out first then took my time and they all look decent.

Also check the NFA rules. The engraving has to be a certain height and depth.

    1. a 5320.20 is necessary only for interstate moves, either temporary or permanent. No notification to ATF is necessary when moving IN state.

    2. The info on your ppaperwork does not change, as long as the paperwork matches the firearm markings, you are good. It doesn't matter if you moved, the paperwork does not get "updated".

Marking requirements have changed, below are the marking requirements as they are now.
if you ar registering a firearm under the NFA, you are now the "maker" of the new firearm, you must mark it according to regs

    name (abbrev ok)
    City,State
    Serial #
    :

Sec. 479.102 How must firearms be identified?

    (a) You, as a manufacturer, importer, or maker of a firearm, must
legibly identify the firearm as follows:

    (1) By engraving, casting, stamping (impressing), or otherwise
conspicuously placing or causing to be engraved, cast, stamped
(impressed) or placed on the frame or receiver thereof an individual
serial number. The serial number must be placed in a manner not
susceptible of being readily obliterated, altered, or removed, and must
not duplicate any serial number placed by you on any other firearm. For
firearms manufactured, imported, or made on and after January 30, 2002,
the engraving, casting, or stamping (impressing) of the serial number
must be to a minimum depth of .003 inch and in a print size no smaller
    than 1/16 inch; and

    (2) By engraving, casting, stamping (impressing), or otherwise
conspicuously placing or causing to be engraved, cast, stamped
(impressed), or placed on the frame, receiver, or barrel thereof certain
additional information. This information must be placed in a manner not
susceptible of being readily obliterated, altered or removed. For
firearms manufactured, imported, or made on and after January 30, 2002,
the engraving, casting, or stamping (impressing) of this information
must be to a minimum depth of .003 inch. The additional information
    includes:

    (i) The model, if such designation has been made;

    (ii) The caliber or gauge;

(iii) Your name (or recognized abbreviation) and also, when
    applicable, the name of the foreign manufacturer or maker;

(iv) In the case of a domestically made firearm, the city and State
(or recognized abbreviation thereof) where you as the manufacturer
maintain your place of business, or where you, as the maker, made the
    firearm; and

    (v) In the case of an imported firearm, the name of the country in
which it was manufactured and the city and State (or recognized abbreviation
thereof) where you as the importer maintain your place of business

Jaybell: So does this mean I have to assign another S/N to my shotgun?

What you described for the markings is how I thought it already was, what is different?

if it already has a serial # that's what you use.

If your using an existing receiver you only need to add your name, city, state.

As for the engraving, I've seen an example of a "Things Remembered" hack job on an AR-15 lower that'd make you cry. The engraver and the bit they used chiped the alluminum up pretty bad. Try to find a reputable engraver that is willing to do a firearm or perhaps a machinist. There may be other places that can do it too. Do you want to trust it to a pimple faced kid working in the mall?

Shipping them off is no fun. Particularly when you think UPS just lost your registered receiver. But there are licensed guys that can handle the engraving for an NFA item. Orion Arms did mine.... http://www.orion-arms.com/new/ Not sure if he's set up to do shotguns but I"m sure he could do it. I'd rather suffer the pain and anguish of shipping it off than seeing somebody ruin my new NFA thingymajig. Just my $0.02.

    Good luck.
