Re: NFA engraving
Some free advice: Don't do the engraving before you get the Form 1 back. Sometimes ATF doesn't like how you plan to shorten your name or abbreviate a town, and this problem increases if you use a trust, for example. If you've already had "Bob Smith, H'burg PA" engraved and then ATF tells you to spell out "Robert" and "Harrisburg", what are you going to do?
Make sure that the engraving is deep enough. I've seen one that a trophy shop did, and it looks like it would buff out with a little scrubby pad. It's actually better to do it yourself with a Dremel and an engraving bit, than to have it done professionally but shallow. Just take your time, use block letters, and practice on a piece of scrap steel first.
If you do use a professional, you should probably maintain custody of it unless they happen to be an FFL/SOT. You can wait half an hour while they do the engraving, and this avoids an unlawful transfer to some guy at a machine shop or trophy store.Attorney Phil Kline, AKA gunlawyer001@gmail.com

Re: NFA engraving
IDENT and Orion Arms are the 2 biggest places that I know of.
There not local though.
I think as long as your not abbreviating anything its better to do the engraving first. To make sure the lower isnt damaged or lost in the mail ect....

Re: NFA engraving
I had sent three lowers to Orion Arms to get engraved. They did a very nice job with a quick turn-around time of 2 weeks. I would recommend them if you're able to swing the cost.

Re: NFA engraving
I had a trophy type place do an ar lower and a Sxs receiver today. The ar looks good (though larger than wanted) the Sxs will probably need to be made deeper. Seems they are not tooled up well for hardened steel.
