    Default LTCF reference

Hi, just had a simple question that I can not find. For the two references needed for the LTCF, can one be a girlfriend that you live with. It says family but by law we are not related or married yet, etc.. So I was just wondering if it be OK to use her as a reference.

The answer to this probably depends on the county, since the reference requirements are different (or non-existent) depending on what the sheriff/Chief think they can get away with.

Since they tell you it can't be family, I would assume that using a GF would be fine, but you may run into trouble if the reference has the same address as you. I think the paperwork for my county (Monroe) also specifies that the person can't live at the same address as you, not just that they aren't a relative.

Your best bet would probably be to just call and ask.

You're in Philthydelphia so Lord only knows the rules on the day you apply.

As a start, here is the link to THEIR instructions for applying - good luck:

    Agreed..call and ask.

I didnt use my fiancee 5+ years ago...because we lived in the same house.

I just picked up my renewal a few weeks ago and hopefully in 5 years ill be in a different county.

Legally they would have no basis to deny you for putting down a girlfriend as a reference. The Uniform Firearms Act doesn't even mention references, let alone require them, it just authorizes the state police to establish "provisions" on the application form to ensure compliance with the statute. The state police form requests two references and says "NOT FAMILY MEMBERS" for restrictions, and a live-in girlfriend is not legally family. The sheriff (or chief of police in Philly) has no legal authority to add any other restrictions.

As a practical matter, unless you want to fight an uphill battle at a cost of time and possibly money for an attorney to stand on principle (and more power to you if you do!), you'd best find out what your issuing authority considers acceptable and go with what they say.

Thanks for the input, i'll give em a call but hope its not a problem. Otherwise i'll have to throw out the sheet she filled out and find someone else which isn't a problem. Just more convenient since shes right here to fill the form out.

What sheet she filled out? She shouldn't have to fill out anything.

Philly has a nice long reference sheet for both of your references to complete.

The ONLY requirement is that your reference is "NOT FAMILY MEMBER".
    That's it.

No reference form needs to be filled out. Your reference shouldn't even be informed that you're applying for a LTCF. That's confidential
