The term hoagie originated in the Philadelphia area. The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin reported, in 1953, that Italians working at the World War I era shipyard in Philadelphia, known as Hog Island where emergency shipping was produced for the war effort, introduced the sandwich, by putting various meats, cheeses, and lettuce between two slices of bread. This became known as the "Hog Island" sandwich; shortened to Hoggies, then the "hoagie".

Like mpan72 said, once it goes into the oven it's called a grinder. I really don't know why, but it's been that way as long as I remember.

Here's a homemade cheese steak meal protection thread from start to finish I did a while ago

    raw ingredients
    home made fries

chip steak and cheese cooking up in the pan

    sauteed Valida onions
    mixed together
    ready to go

Sorry, but the meat on a good cheese steak is Rib-Eye, other than that pretty much spot on, well except my beer would be of the birch or root variety.

Oh, and around here any sandwich baked is a grinder, especially popular in pizza shops.

I can see you don't know nothing about food. How can you make an italian hoagie with some native sausage?

You will need italian salami, its bigger, its longer and it is satisfying.

Cheese wiz with fried onions on your steak. When you order from one of the famous places in Philly you have to do it correctly.

*SWISS*? Good lord, who are you, John Kerry?

Swiss doesn't belong on a cheese steak. Your only choices are Cheese Whiz or American, but Provolone is barely acceptable.

    Amateurs. Sheesh.

When I make them at home I use real cheese. If I am in the area and feel like reliving my youth and get one from Geno's I gotta get a wiz wit. No other words can spill from my lips when I am at the steak window. Oh yea I almost forgot you have to order fries from a seperate window.
