Default Pistol-How far and how accurate ?

Pistol folks, when you head to the range to practice at what distance do you usually shoot from ? And what sort of accuracy do you expect of yourself ?

I shoot 85% of the time at 7 yards. I stretch only as far 15-25 yards. Slow, perfectly aimed fire, I expect the be able to keep a 2-3" group at 7 yards. at 25 yards, if I stay within the -1 section of an IDPA target, I'm happy.

For me, I am fairly happy with this at 30'. Trying to dial it in a bit tighter though.

I took my new 92A1 out this morning.
Both of these targets were shot at approx 10yds.
I thought the groups should've been tighter.

Arms get tired with that pistol hanging out there

Depends on the pistol, but I feel comfortable with minute of man accuracy out of my SIG 1911 out to 50 yards. 10,9,8 & 7 ring accuracy out to 25 yards MOST of the time.

I get these type of groups at the same distance but always seem to get a flyer out of each mag. Grrr.

People that do not shoot well compensate by getting close to the target. I always shot at 25 yards, but due to eyesight problems and old age now do most of my shooting at 20 yards. I recently worked up a mild 44 special load for my 5-1/2" super Blackhawk, a 240 grain Kieth bullet (Lyman 429421) with 6.8 grains of Unique. If I do my part its good for 2-3" 6 shot groups shot standing. There are days when 4-5" groups are the best i can do.
While I do not consider myself a good shooter anymore I do try to shoot several times a week, never a large amount at one time but often, practice is the key.

I have to agree with Old Shooter! If you can hit a target at 25 yards anything closer will be that much better. I know must folks are not shooting for NRA Bullseye accuracy but if you can learn the skills to but 9 out of 10 rounds in the black at range you can put them all in one hole at 7 yards. Once these skills are developed one can work on speed.

I forget the coach but someone summed it up in one word - fundamentals. Sight picture, trigger control and practice.

BTW, with this will come the bragging rights when you can hit a 12" steel plate at 75 yards with a 1911. So cool!

I'm comfortable being able to place 4-5 rounds in a 10" circle anywhere under 10 yards in under 2 seconds from holster. Slow fire I better be able to hold less than 2" out to 25 yards free standing.

Benchrest I expected a 1" group at 25 and no bigger than 2 at 50. However that is using a custom 1911. Using a Glock or Sig/HK whatever... I only worry about the first one as the others a simply not competition handguns.

we need to keep things in perspective here. shooting large caliber revolvers that are used for hunting or just target shooting and competition then yeah , at 25 yds you had better shoot good consistent tight groups. especially if you are working custom loads for individual guns.

in my estimation unless you are running mach grade service pistols and ammo then im very happy to keep a 6-8" group at combat distances. for me combat distance is 10 yds and in.

if i can run rapid fire or double taps at 10 yds and keep 80% them inside 8" im VERY happy.

btw OP, there are some mods that can me made to your pistol to get it in match trim if you wanted to do that.
