Most well rounded sidearm?

This is probably a vague question, and will likely cause some sort of debate.

I'm wanting to acquire a pistol that is reliable, with a magazine capacity and size that makes it easy to shoot accurately and easy to conceal during all seasons. Budget-wise, I don't have a lot of money to spend.. at least under 500 dollars, the lower the better, but I don't want to buy something and then decide later that I made the wrong choice. I want it to be the gun that I'll have for a long time and can depend on. I don't want a fling, I want a relationship with this gun. I like safeties, but I like simple-ness as well. Glocks are a little too risky to me, even though I have (to me) excellent trigger discipline, I can see a lot going wrong with a glock in less than ideal circumstances. I don't want to injure myself or my pets or a friend or family member or a stranger. I'm pretty familiar with most modern and traditional options, I've fired a ruger SR9 and liked it but it was a bit bulky for concealment, but I just want to see what suggestions I get. Preferably available in multiple calibers, I've fired 9mm, 9mm mak, .22.. I haven't yet tried .45 ACP. I'm concerned most with balance of all concerned factors, it doesn't have to be particularly powerful, or particularly small, particularly new. I want it to fit in my hand, light but not so light that it'll fly up and hit me in the face if I fire it without a supporting hand. I wear a small size glove, I don't have huge hands.

What is there that meets this description?

Beretta PX4 compact. Tanners is selling them right now for $419 NIB. It'll be the best investment you'll ever make for a outstanding firearm.

I'm newer with guns but I love my Ruger LC9. I chose it purposely for the long trigger pull (although that bothers some) because I know that there won't be any accidental discharges or anything like that. The safety is VERY easy to flick off with the thumb while drawing, so its safe, but not *too* safe, if you know what I mean. Its quite compact, I think, for a 9mm.

I carry the LCP too but of course I prefer shooting the LC9. The 9 goes in my handbag most of the time, but I hope to start carrying it on my person, soon, too, instead of just the .380.

Have you looked at the SR9C?

The SR9 is about the slimmest double stack pistol around, so if that's too bulky, I think you're looking at a single stack. Slim single stacks 9mms are the hot fad right now, with a bunch of new choices (Beretta Nano, SIG P290, Walther PPS, S&W SHield) in addition to the old standy Kahrs.

Save your money and buy a KelTec p11. I carried one for years and NEVER had a failure. If you like the LC9 it is almost a copy of the P11.

I migrated to a Ruger SP101 and now carry an XD45 Compact.

It really should depend on what fits your hand the best. I saw a good example of this today. I struggled with accuracy with the P11 but my friend today who was not an experience pistol shooter made that gun look deadly accurate while I am dead on with the XD45. One just fits my hand better than the other.

Go on Gunsamerica and look up Robertson Trading Post or just type in Sig P228. They have several used Swiss police trade-ins in various condition (holster wear) from $469-$579. Higher prices ones have had their slides refinished. You could get one of the $469 ones, then later down the road have it refinished. Fifteen rounds of 9mm in a compact, well balanced, accurate, double action/single action, easy to carry set up.

I bought one a few weeks ago and have put about 400 rnds through (FMJ and HP) and have had no hiccups. I actually have switched to this as my EDC in a Bianchi Accu-lock 82 (or whatever they're called) with the retention device.
