Default An interesting talk with a LEO

I had an interesting talk with my Father-in-law the other day. My wife doesn’t like it when I carry, and made a comment about it at dinner when she bumped my hip and noticed it was there. Her Dad, a long time veteran of the police force and former Chief of Police interrupted her and told her that the police are there to deter crime by catching criminals AFTER they have committed a crime. It is a very rare case where they prevent a crime from occurring, or even get to the scene before the criminal has already left. Most of the time, Police just pick up the pieces and try to find out who did it. He told me he was glad that I carry, because when I carry I’m not only trying to prevent crime but I’m protecting his daughter and that makes him proud. Then he reminded me that the first thing he said to me after we got married was “No givebacks” and I was stuck with her no matter what her opinion of my view of open/concealed carry was.

Maybe she will give her fathers opinion a little more weight than she obviously gives about yours. Glad to hear about a supportive father in law

I learned early on that if I want to continue to buy guns without her scrutinizing how much money I spend on them, then I have no opinion.

Folks, we have a new acronym here: FILEO (Father-in-Law-Enforcement-Officer).

    Glad he approves!

"NO GIVEBACKS" Sounds like Dad knows what his daughter can be like.
I always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.

The former Chief is right. I will not ever forget reading a great story about a California gun owner who befriended an old L.A. Police Chief many decades ago (not Daryl Gates or anybody of notoriety).

He wanted all of L.A.'s responsible law abiding citizens to own and carry because he believed it was their responsibility to keep the peace, know and follow the laws. He simply stated his view on the role of police "We're here to help."

The Chief (and caring father-in-law) is right. Police can only be reactive in most instances. As a retired Chief I believe in all citizens taking personal responsibility to protect themselves and their family members both in the residence and out on the street. Owning and becoming proficient with firearms (and other alternative weapons), and having them accessable if needed is a responisble action and good common sense along with being aware of your surroundings. To all citizens, be prepared and be safe out there (and also in the home). Keep your powder dry !!!!!
