Speeding is costly
Just got a letter sent through our company, seems we get these from time to time. Having some 60 vans on the road our company makes sure their drivers are on their toes..... PS I recieved this on Feb. 11 / 08
Starting today, Pennsylvania will launch 30 day speeding ticket frenzy.
The state estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in
speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay state troopers' overtime.
There will be 50 state troopers on duty at all times patrolling the 9
main intersections and highways. They are the following:
I-279 north and south
I-376 east and west
I-76 east and west
I-80 east and west
I-79 north and south
I-70 east and west
PA-60
PA-66
US-22
5 mph above the limit can justify a ticket and every state trooper is
supposed to pull a car over and write a ticket every 10 to 20 minutes.
They have issued 30 brand new unmarked Dodge Charger Police cruisers
and are bringing in all of their part timers on full time. If you work in
western Pennsylvania, you will probably take one of these highways.
It's up to you how fast you are going when they clock you.
KDKA and WDVE confirmed all of this. So be safe and don't forget
speeding tickets are on you.Skeet is a sport where you are better to hit half of each bird then completely blast one and miss the other completely.

Re: Speeding is costly
I do plenty of driving (1000-1800/week) I'll have to keep my eyes open and see if I notice an increase in the number of troopers on the roads.....

This is probably NOT true. See link at Snopes and go to bottom of page.

Even though it's a myth, it's still a good reminder to slow down.Last edited by HiredGoon; February 11th, 2008 at 11:33 PM.

Re: Speeding is costly
i heard about this a few months ago from a few LEO's I know, but I never saw any increase in troopers, maybe they where in the planning stages back then though. Either way I believe it since i've heard about it a few times from what would seem to be good sources.

Re: Speeding is costly
Last time we had such a warning, it hit the news a few days after that the increase was noticable, this was just after christmas/newyears Mid jan. http://kdka.com/local/State.Police.Speed.2.630600.html the time before that was around Mid December, I remember going to Lowes on 228 and at the intersecion of 79 there where many State troopers waiting on the ramp ready to give chase to offending drivers.
Things you want to look for, Small planes and helecopters in the air, cars that look in distress on the road sides, Penn-dot or any utility trucks... Increased traffic at entrances and exits to major highways.
This is no Penn Dot worker testing his new fangled toy, it is a State TrooperSkeet is a sport where you are better to hit half of each bird then completely blast one and miss the other completely.

Re: Speeding is costly
The only item in the article that made me skeptical was the part about the part timers. PSP does not have part time troopers.

Re: Speeding is costly
Yeah, I didn't notice that part-timer reference at first. PSP does not have part-timers. This "warning" is different from the previous ones that were actually issued by PSP saying they would be out in more strength, but did not say where exactly.
The warning in the original post here is just another email scam tailor-made for the Pittsburgh area (mentioning area radio stations to make it look better), as referenced on the Snopes.com link above.
These have been done for many other cities in the past.

Re: Speeding is costly
I'll take your word on that, but I can remember well 2 guys who worked for Vector telling me they where "part time" PSP cadets... I can also remember not too long ago, an accident in buttler where a PSP officer had a deadly car accident and the mention that he was part time fire fighter that worked 24 hrs a week for the PSP...
Not to mention any officers who would be hurt that would go on time managment "part time" status... because there are not always enough duties to do, thinking like "light duty".. "Desk Duty" Partially retired... these are all Part time statuses.
Might want to give http://ucr.psp.state.pa.us/UCR/Repor...UI.asp?rbSet=6 a look, seems there are not only part time jobs in the psp but also "Civilian" jobs. On the link hit statewide and check off the part time positions at the bottom.

Re: Speeding is costly
There definitely are PSP Civilian jobs such as PCO (Police Communicaion Officer) the people who are the dispatchers: answer phones, dispatch over the radio, man the desk at the stations. As well as other support staff: secretaries, mechanics, etc.
