I'm sure a lot of it also came out of his experience as a police officer.
Biggest tip I can give is to make sure your shirt is down before you get out of your car, then use the reflection off your car to be sure you aren't exposed without having to physically check it with your hands.

You don't have to, but the guys that are easiest to make all seem to have them. Cops are particularly bad at this too. I remember I was on the subway after the phillies won the world series and they were having the parade. They had undercover cops everywhere to monitor the crowded train cars. The one in my car had on 5.11 pants, black boots a crew cut, oakleys, a radio earbud and a baggy Phillies shirt with body armor printing through it. I don't think he was fooling anyone as there was several feet of space around him in an otherwise shoulder-to-shoulder train car.
