    Default Handgun permit

I am going to apply for a handgun permit in pa. I reviewed the application online and one questions asks the reason you want a permit to conceal. I would like it for self defense and also for hunting and fishing. I'm wandering what to put down for that question

It doesn't really matter because the LTCF is valid for any lawful purpose regardless of the reason. Just pick "self-defense" or "protection", or any other variation they have it known as.

Don't worry about those questions really. It's pretty meaningless in the state of PA, just put self defense down on the form and that's it.

Go done to the sheriff's office at the County Courthouse. Enter on the Orange street side since the Duke Street side is closed due to construction. Go through the security checkpoint and go through the first door on your right. Bring $20 cash with you, fill out the form, wait for them to process it and get your picture taken. Whole process shouldn't take more than 45 minutes if they're not really busy.

The guys that work in the office are fairly friendly, the guards at the security checkpoint, are sometimes.

Go with "self defense." Under PA law it makes no difference, but in the real world it might save you some grief. When I applied, I had checked "target shooting" on the application (I had no intention of carrying at the time). The deputy slid the application back across the counter and told me to check "self defense," with no further explanation. I did, and my LTCF says "self defense." While you may know that your LTCF is valid regardless of the stated "reason to carry," an LEO likely won't -- especially if you're in a reciprocal state.

    Check the Self Defense box.

With every other option on the application form, there are accommodations in the various laws that allow you to transport a firearm without needing a LTCF. You need to abide by certain limitations such as the firearm being in a sealed container or going directly to and from an approved location, however they all can be done without a LTCF some way or another. The only exception is to be able to carry a firearm on you concealed for self defense purposes. For this, you need a LTCF and there is no way around it.

By checking the Self Defense box on the application, you are removing the option for your local sheriff to just deny it and tell you to carry it to the range and back unloaded and according to the law.

Just my $0.002 opinion. (Adjustments made for current market price.)

That would be an unlawful reason for denial.

I checked all the boxes (seriously), and the permit came back
with self defense in that box.
