Fingerprinting Question...
Hey guys - forgive me if these is an ignorant question but I want to be sure I follow protocol here.
Does it matter where I get my prints done? For example, I still work in Jersey (yeah yeah, I know..) and by the time I get back to PA it's usually way past 4pm and too late to get my prints done without skipping work for a day.
So, would it be a bad idea, or is it even acceptable, to get my prints done at a police station in NJ? Also - does the sheriff need those done before I drop off my paperwork for CLEO sign off?
Just trying to expedite the process and things done.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Fingerprinting Question...
Hey 27 - I was definitely not clear on my post.. sorry.
I was given 2 blue fingerprint cards to be completed as part of my NFA purchase (yes, they are the blue cards - if I remember correctly they have FBI info on back).
So, my question really relates to whether or not the prints need to be completed at a local police station, at the sheriffs office when I go there for sign-off, or somewhere else. I'd call my dealer but it's kind of late. Thought I'd post here.
EDIT: Yes, they have FBI info on back (how to take prints, etc..) , ORI Box from ATF-NFA BRANCH. Standard form from what I have read.Last edited by Stack; February 7th, 2008 at 10:18 PM.

Re: Fingerprinting Question...
The Pa State Police did mine at no charge.
The officer told me that construction guys, carpenters, cement finishers and plumbers have the most crapped up fingers. He tried mine 3 times on certain fingers before getting a decent one.
It doesn't matter where you get printed. I have been printed a couple times by my local PD, a couple times by the PA SP, and I was working at a VA hospital and they did my prints for a Utah CCW as a courtesy. You can also get someone who does it for cash bucks (verify there is no restriction on how or who you get prints from))
Local PD used black ink.
Feds used red ink and heated it to turn it black (this was different).
Pa SP did it electronically
Good luck,

Re: Fingerprinting Question...
I have done my own prints/had a family member help me, with no problem in the past. I used to use the state police, but it became a hassle. The only thing that you have to understand with fingerprinting is that they want you to "roll" the finger, which means to include the sides of the finger. Some people find this difficult to do themselves; thus, it is easier to relax the hand/fingers and let someone else do it. I hope this makes sense...

Re: Fingerprinting Question...
as Sigforlife said, you can roll your own prints, its fully legal.
roll the finger form left to right or vice versus, just make sure they are fully clear, no smudges.
it helps to practice for a bit on something other thn the 2 cards you have.
Also, fingerprint ink pads are available online, and possibly at office supply places...

Re: Fingerprinting Question...
What is the availability of blank cards? Are they controlled items?
It is kind of a hassle scheduling an appointment ( I drove over 20 miles to get the Pa St Pol. to do mine because the hours for doing this closer were not in line with my hours.
