Completed: Beretta 92FS project

I finally finished up my winter project; a custom Beretta 92FS. I happened to come across a “like new” two-tone at Stonybrook Shooting Supply in east York, and bought it up at a decent price back around September. It might have been fired, but sure didn’t look it. Beretta discontinued the two-tone several years ago, and I think it’s a real shame. It brings to mind the much more expensive Vertec. I decided to purchase some parts every month until I had what I wanted to make this a real smooth shooter with the least amount of recoil possible. I believe I’ve succeeded. By spreading out the purchase of all of the parts over several months, the wife will never know! (I hope)

Now here are the parts that I am about to add:




So what IS all of that stuff? Here’s the breakdown:

-EFK Fire Dragon ported barrel
-Sprinco recoil reducing guide rod buffer system
-Sprinco tactical recoil spring
-Beretta Elite II skeletonized hammer
-Wolff “D” hammer spring
-Beretta walnut target grips
-Mecgar 20-round extended magazine
-Hex head grip screws. At least I didn’t have to buy these.

I really went back and forth deciding if I wanted to install Millet adjustable target sights, but from what I saw online of how they overhang the slide I decided against it. Also, a gunsmith should do that and these items I can switch out easily myself with no help.

Finally, the finished product. I think I’m having Beretta overload…..

So here we can see the stainless Sprinco recoil reducer guide rod and EFK porting. There is no doubt that the Sprinco is the best recoil buffer system out there. The 1911 guys swear by them, and there aren't any plastic pieces to replace every 5,000 rounds. Nothing cheap about it. You get what you pay for.




Anyone familiar with EFK will notice that their porting has really come along from the “slots” that they used to cut into the barrel. These are actually machined nicely and for function. Also, this barrel doesn't move, AT ALL. When you shake the pistol, there is no barrel rattle. EFK got this right.




And the grips! These extended and raised walnut target grips are a bit hard to find, but worth it. I love the palm swell and stippling.




You can’t find any photos online showing just how these grips are raised. Also, you’ll notice in this shot how they extend down past the frame beyond what normal grips would. Because of this, I had to sand down part of the plastic edges of the 20-round Mecgar magazine that is shown. Between the grips and extended magazine, the pistol now has a much larger grip, nearing that of my Sig X-Five. Due to the swell, the only other modification I’m now considering is a stainless extended magazine release.




The skeletonized Elite II hammer is really nice. Combine this with the lighter Wolff springs and you’ve got a real winner. It was a bit cold the weekend I assembled this pistol, so I haven’t gotten it to the range yet. I have 100 rounds of RWS that I intend to break it in with. With these modifications, I don’t expect it to feel like much more than a .22LR.

Late Summer / early Fall Project: TDF finally breaks into the .223 caliber with a Tikka T3. I incredibly scored a BNIB T3 Sporter stock, so now I hunt for a used T3 Varmint base and everything else I’ll need. Can’t wait!

I agree, a fiber optic if it is going to the range. A tritium night site if it is going into the bedroom drawer.
