Hunters safety course

I've never been hunting, I recently got my first rifle, a Marlin 336XLR 30-30. I've been to the state website and have registered for a course in Chester County next month. (I went thru the whole year on their calendar, my county doesn't even offer the course).

What I wanted to know is what to expect, the state site doesn't really go into it in detail, is there going to be class and shooting? All class or what. If there is shooting do I bring my own rifle and ammo?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It's all classroom.

The calendar fills up as the fall get closer.

There is NO shooting.

A friend of mine took the traditional class and it was a whole weekend of 11 yr. olds and their dads. I took the on-line course and went for 90 minutes for a quick overview and test. The choice is yours, but if you know a bit about firearms and have some common sense, I'd go for the on-line course, if you're over 18, which I suspect you might be.

As mentioned above, its all class. Each varies some according to who is teaching.

The class I went to years ago comprised mostly of:

watching old safety movies(think old highschool drivers ed crash flicks)
discussing game and minor gun laws
basic gun safety(usually with a few types of guns present)
general season times
trapping safety
general ethics with other sporting persons while hunting/trapping
then a simple test that is mostly common logic and safety.

I'm thinking it was two 8hr sessions(been way too many years to remember).

I too registered for the classes but in Montgomery County. I wasn't aware they offered an online course. I'd much rather do it that way. Is this something that is found on www.pgc.state.pa.us ?

I just took my son to a hunter safety course last year. The course in Warren Co. was about 10 to 11hr long, usually 3hr Friday evening and then 8hr on Saturday in the morning. There was no shooting involved with the training just different types of rifle actions ie. lever, pump, and bolt. Thanks Otto, I've already been to that site, in fact I registered for a class, via that page, next month, tmascal mentioned take the class online somehow, anyone else hear of that? Would be a lot easier than running out to Kennet Square from Upper Darby at rush hour two nights.

Just curious: Where in UD are you? I grew up on Timberlake Rd over by 69th street. I moved out of there about 5 years ago to Drexel Hill then to DE then to Pottstown. Most of my family still lives in Drexel Hill.

BTW: I searched for online classes on the pa websites and I haven't found anything. Everything I see points to actually taking the classes in the classroom environment.
