Colt Commander 1911 Stainless Stl Beauty
Hey all- I saw a beauty of a Colt today- ColtCommander Stainless Steel, Rosewood grips and marked 100 years of service. Has anyone here fired one (I'm sure it's sweet)? Only thing I didn't like was the price at over $1000. Price check anyone?

Re: Colt Commander 1911 Stainless Stl Beauty
Colt's official MSRP for that weapon is $960. Now I'm sure the gun shop will sometimes mark it up a bit. It is an outstanding pistol from everything I've read. I own 3 Colt gov't models, so I only have first hand experience with the full size. If it were me in the market, I would ensure that this is unfired, NIB and I would offer $1000+tax and not a penny more. Ace sporting goods is where I bought my two NIB Colts and they were both 40-60 dollars under MSRP. Plus the 100 year rollmarked pistols are not rare yet so don't let the gunshop talk too much sales BS. Good luck and keep us posted.

Not the stainless XSE version, but M1911.ORG reviewed the basic 1991 Combat Commander last year.

combat commanders are really nice guns. The only caveat is that they are neither fish nor fowl, as Col Cooper puts it. If you want a duty size gun, I'd go with a full size 1911. If you want a carry gun, you can shave a lot of weight by getting the alloy framed lightweight commander model.
Mine was $800 gently used - w/out 100 year roll markLast edited by Orsogato; February 12th, 2012 at 10:24 AM.

Re: Colt Commander 1911 Stainless Stl Beauty
Nice review Greywolf! I would like to get a series 70 commander. Seeing as I just bought a 1978 Colt Gov't recently, I don't think the boss (wife) would be in the best of moods if I brought another home at this moment. I would like to see Colt reissue a commander S70, not that there is anything wrong with the current S80 offerings. I just prefer no FP safety.

It's been my experience that its hard to go wrong buying a Colt 1911. And the Commander version in SS is probably my favorite, especially the series 70.

Re: Colt Commander 1911 Stainless Stl Beauty
Price seems about right, just completed my Colt O frame journey since last summer just finding a new Colt 1911 for sale. Found a stainless 1911 series 70 (model O1070A1CS), it was about the same as yours ($900-ish). Generally I don't sweat the purchase price if I plan to keep it a long time. The increased value over time will more than amortize this. Exception: if it's really overpriced to the point of gouging, like 50-100% higher than it should be. IMHO, you did fine.
I took the (pictured) grips off & replaced them with a set of USGI 'nam era plastic grips, they're about the same shade of reddish brown. This way it won't matter if the grips get wet or the checkering gets flattened.
Photos of my new 1911:
--
Left and right profile. Came with two magazines, a lock & rosewood grips.
--
Standard ejection port profile, note polished sides but bead blasted top and bottom surfaces. A BM42 in the photo seems to be the recent photo convention, so here's mine.
--
Note slightly larger and higher sights than W.W.II era M1911A1s. 2011 O1070A1CS (left), 1943 US&S (right).Gloria: "65 percent of the people murdered in the last 10 years were killed by hand guns"
Archie Bunker: "would it make you feel better, little girl, if they was pushed outta windows?"
