    Default Ruger M77/357 or M77/44

My fine fellow gun enthusiasts, I find the following rifles to be interesting and I have not been able to find any independent information about these models.

If anyone has any articles or direct knowledge of either one, please pass it along as I'm seriously thinking of buying an M77/44.

Accuracy is paramount, function is second.

The 44 us a cool rifle. I don't own one, but have shot at least three of them. They are better than minute if deer/hog/man at 100 yards. Never benched one. Recoil is tame enough for a youngster. Wooden stock version would be my choice but expect to pay a premium. The .357 is new.

We traded into a 77/44 several years ago. It was alright but did not ring my bell as the accuracy was about on par with a Mdl. 94. Maybe your area would be better but around here they are a real problem to get rid of when you get tired of them.

Ruger 77/44 Suppressed video (there is a couple more video here of the Suppressed version)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3rsK2tv2KA

Shot hand loads all with the goal to be under the speed of sound with 300 HP grain bullets and 240 grain.

Never found a tack driver hand load (nor had or made the time to really find a better one). Best group is 4" at hundred yard 300 grain heads (only had it on sandbag & bench two different times at the range checking loads and both were less than ideal “no windy” days for this task).

Only made up 7 different load with 300 grain HP XTP Hornady bullets just changed the amount of (same) powder before putting pressing this into service, (powder selection was based on friends load for identical firearm).

Still wacked several deer with this less than perfect load.

Only problem every had with this firearm is wacked a deer on a snow covered day with a high of about 4 degrees, climbed down and reloaded while gun was still warm, trailed the deer a short distance managed to get snow into action at some point, melted and frozen action so it wouldn’t open. Didn’t realize this till after dragging deer back to car about this problems. Had to safely discharge next to car, still this was enough to warm to open action again as it was dang cold that day..

To be honest I like clover leaves or one holers at hundred yards from any rifle, never tried the ballistic tips. Like I said never made the time and extra effort to tighten up the group with hand loads.

Know of another person (acquaintance) that had another suppressed rifle that couldn’t get the dang gun to shoot under 12” groups at 50 yards sent it twice back to the factory that built the suppressor on the host. On the second time it came back, they fixed whatever it was because at that it would drive tack at 50 yards with a similar load that I use, EXCEPT it only like the 44 special cases for whatever reason, never tried them.

My experience is limited to 3 of these M77 / 44 mag bolt action rifles. Note they used to make a semi auto 44 mag rifle, don't know IF they resumed production of these as well.

Don't know anything about a un suppressed M77/44 (high velocity loads) or ANYTHING about M77/357 (didn't know they made one in 357)

    I hope this helps
