One man was in custody after he reportedly shot two men — one fatally — who tried to rob him on a bicycle trail near the Schuylkill River pedestrian bridge between Reading and West Reading, officials said.
Police from several departments responded to the area beneath a bridge span of the West Shore Bypass after receiving a 9-1-1 call for a shooting with two victims about 11 a.m., officials said.
According to initial reports, a man ran across the pedestrian bridge to the Reading side of the river and flagged down someone in the 200 block of Riverfront Drive, near Reading Area Community College.
Within minutes, Reading and West Reading police, state police and Berks County deputy sheriffs found one man dead and another wounded in a sliver of Cumru Township on the opposite side of the pedestrian bridge from the city’s Riverfront Park.

The area is just south of West Reading’s Bertolet Fishing Dock at South First Avenue and Chestnut Street.
The wounded man was shot in the neck and taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital, officials said.
Police did not release anyone’s name.
According to officials:
The suspect, who had been riding a bicycle, remained in the area after the shooting and told police he shot the men in self-defense because they were trying to rob him. He was taken to a police car and taken to the Cumru police station for questioning.
Police took another man nearby into custody, but it was unclear how he was connected to the shooting.
Cumru police took over the investigation when it was determined the shooting happened in the township.
Chief Jed Habecker and detectives from his department were assisted by detectives with the forensic services unit of the district attorney’s office.
District Attorney John T. Adams and First Assistant District Attorney M. Theresa Johnson were at the scene briefly.
Investigators declined to provide details of the shooting.Last edited by sk8r101all; January 26th, 2012 at 01:08 AM.

Re: Thun Trail
Interesting...I've been wanting to go to Thun Trail, but perhaps I'll hold off a little longer since I have a three year old.

Re: Thun Trail
I use this trail many times a week. Day, morning, and even in the dark. I've never had a problem on the trail, no a single one in the last 6 years. It's as safe as any place. This is/was an isolated incident. Plus, the aggressors from this incident are either dead, in the hospital, or in the detention center.

While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.
