My 870 Express was purchased in 1988 , it has slain deer , pheasant , squirrel ,rabbit and duck. It never once let me down in the field , it is a tank. I have the 20" slug barrel ( smooth bore ) and the 26" vent rib. I have retired mine to stricly HD now and added a few after market tweaks. ( I now have a Benelli Nova for duck and turkey and a Benelli M2 field for small game and clays )

I have ZERO complaints about my 870 Express.

I have used an 870 for hunting and fun for 35 years and they have never done me wrong. It's not the best gun if you really get into clays (get a $2K O/U), but for someone shooting the odd round of trap, they do great. I've had 12, 16, 20, and 28 ga., and used them for everything from doves to bear and as a one time LEO kept one for people. Anyone have a .410 870?

The most important this is if it's going to be used as a Home Defense gun, practice monthly with it and run different drills so you don't become complacent . Also make sure you have an idea where everyone is in the house so you don't fire threw walls.
