SKS Woes
I bought a Yugo rifle during the Cabelas sale. I bought an ATI Strikeforce stock which requires you to change the handguard. Total PITA! I cracked the wood handguard attempting to remove the pin and eventually drilled the pin out.
I got the plastic handguard installed but I could not get the latch to close that locks the gas tube in place. I dont know what the difference is. The gas tube is the same length. I filed a little of the corner off and now I can get the latch to close but after a few shots, it pops up. I saw that Tapco makes an upper handguard with the gas tube already installed. Any ideas if that will work? Any other suggestions?

Re: SKS Woes
As long as the ferrule was replaced in the same location and flush with the end of the tube the latch should close as it did before.
More often then not the new handguard contacts the stock not allowing it to drop as low as it should go. This in turn will hinder you locking the the latch completely. Happens a lot it seems when guys replace their HG.
1. Remove the stock completely then see how the HG will lock up.
2. If needed material from the HG can be removed to allow an air gap between the two undersides and the stock should this be the problem.Last edited by Fragger; January 1st, 2012 at 07:54 AM.

Re: SKS Woes
I had to do some stock fitting and remove some plastic from both the stock and the plastic that surrounds the gas tube in order for it to fit right.
2 places I remember were where the gas tube meets that plastic stock and the bottom of the gas tube stock. I did not have to modify any metal at all and would not do so.
