I'm hesitant to bring this horrific topic back from the dead, but it seams like the best place to ask this,, so.....a question to those in the know.....

When does one need to file the Form 1?

    a) before ANY work is started.

    b) before machine work takes place, but after concept, sketch-up, CAD, and CFD has been done

    c) before the manufacture of a specific element of the suppressor (ie, the tube?, or the baffle system?)

    d) prior to completion of manufacture of ALL required elements, ie. end cap design/tube/baffle system... basically a completed unit unassembled

    e) prior to initial assembly/test fit, etc.... ie, not a finished product, but enough that the item (if you did your job) would function as designed.

    -------

A few talking point about why I ask,,,

can different baffle designs be designed/machined/tested, prior to the filing of a form 1 if the other required parts are not in existence yet with no means to use on a firearm?

    if not-

Can multiple baffle systems be designed and tested after the filing of a form 1, if they are designed to be used inside the same tube system, resulting in extra items that have no use in the finished item.

I am very interested in this as well.^^^ I would like to build my own and where can I get basic plans to start from? I realize I could google it or something but then they would start watching me on the emails...

ACTUAL physical manufacturing cannot take place BEFORE you receive your approved form 1 back from the ATF.

sketch, CAD, do whatever ya want, but do not have any PARTS made before your F1 comes back.

    thats it.

So, how does prototyping work? There's gotta be something else involved that legally allows testing a new possibly-patentable design for functionality.

Perhaps the fact that a company in the business of manufacturing suppressors has already received blanket approval for R&D , prototyping, etc. Where as a single person working in his garage shop hasnt ?
