Default Building a single lane shooting range

I wasn't so sure where to put this, sorry if its in the wrong area.

I've heard of people doing this before, basements, garages, or even stand alone buildings for such ranges.

I was just wondering, I know how to build it and all, but I'm a bit confused by the bulletstop, what exactly do I use for a bulletstop? It would only have to stop up to a .308 rifle round or a .50AE pistol round, and I'm pretty sure if it can handle that, it'll handle all shot gun rounds.

Another question as well, would I be required to do anything special? Like to be up to code or will I require any special licenses? Would it be any different then an outdoor range? Thanks in advance!

P.S. If anyone here actually has an indoor range they wouldn't mind me coming and taking a look at to get idea's please let me know, thank you

Did you call your local building & zoning office? That might be the best place to start.

I think his Home Owner's Insurance Agent might be a good idea too.

Nice attitude. The advice given was accurate. Your local township might have ordinances against have an indoor range, your home owner's insurance might cancel your policy if you build such a thing. Those are things to check out first before doing anything else.

A few years ago, a guy with several acres of land had his policy canceled by State Farm when they found out he had built and outdoor range. It can and does happen.

Off the top of my head you'll need to build a ventilation system to draw fresh air across the range and vent it outside. You'd be surprised as to how much smoke will accumulate during a range session. You'll also want to be a bit concerned about lead contamination and exposure to it (since it's in your house). You'd also be surprised as to how much unburnt powder will accumulate and possibly create a fire hazard if not regularly cleaned up. I assume you don't have any neighbors that will be pissed about the noise? Lastly, if you want to be able to shoot rifle rounds, you'll need a bullet trap with a steel backstop rated for high power rifle rounds, not cheap!
