New to this subject. If 1911s are so great, why hasn't any company figured out how to stuff more rounds into the mag. Just courious.

It is simply a package that is good for CQC and not have a mag sticking out to catch something or have a grip so fat that small hands can't hold it. As said, some mans. offer it with the high cap., fat grip, and Para has it in 9mm, now (I think it is 18+1 rds.). STI offers the same, and they have magazines that hold over 25 rds, for their 1911 Eagle as one example (the 6" barrel Eagle is a masterpiece, and shoots under 2" at 50 yds). Having to fight with a 1911 using one hand could be a chore, so the grip can't be so big it can't be held on to. It is easy, on the other hand to carry a number of spare, loaded mags. The weight difference (between high cap and standard cap) can be felt, as well, after carrying the thing for some time. 1911's are a gun you love, hate, or are indifferent about. A lot of people like them, and even the inexpensive one's are very accurate and dependable, nowadays.

I have bought, sold, traded, and horse traded many pistols and revolvers over the past 30 years. I have never gotten rid of any 1911 I have purchased, to date, anyways. I love them.

Like the others said, there are plenty of hicap 1911's out there.

I used a Para P14 for USPSA, 16/17 rnds with mag extensions and the .38super models were holding 20+.
There are also plenty of compact/Officers.Commander size ones in 10rnd capacity as well.

Cheap price but still decent quality can be found in the Rock Island/Armscor line.

What purpose? As a fighting pistol?

Unless someone has small hands and cannot physically fire one correctly, a 15 rnd .45 defeats the purpose of a 1911 .45 how?

I'm all for the 1911 design wise, but it's an antiquated design and updating it is only natural IMO.
If I were to need a combat pistol I'd rather have a 15 rnd .45 over a 7 rnd one if my opponent was behind cover with a 20 some rnd FN.

as stated.. its just my opinion. the 1911 was designed as a single stack (although a long time ago, before double stack was a possibility). the single stack reliability of the 1911 is a big part of the attraction. ..however I own a double stack STI and it's a blast. (along with many other assorted double stack pistols.)

I'd rather depend on training, confidence and lots of practice (and 2 spare mags) with my 1911, along with the ease and carry comfort then depend on the less proven double stack 1911 platform, which has also been proven to be less reliable. (para)

just my opinion, but i prefer single stack standard 1911's.

I used a Para P14 for USPSA

I met a guy yesterday at a local shop who traded his Para double stack 9mm in on an HK (two weeks ago) for this same purpose. Well, I met him as he was buying back the gun he traded. It must be pretty good. He let me feel the DAO trigger and I have to say it was nice. Hammer was a little on the strange side, but if it works...

The grip actually wasn't any bigger than an FN .45 or an HK USP. I had no trouble holding it and my hands definitely aren't big.

You can also get 8 and 10 rd single stack mags. Yeah, not a huge jump, but it is a jump.

If you need more than 8 rounds, you probably need a rifle.
