    Default IDPA - Round Dumping

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-McLWcQuSE

Thats a video of Bob Vogel shooting stage 5 in the IDPA World Championships this summer. IDPA posted it on their Facebook page. Its funny when an organization shows one of their top shooters breaking a rule that defines their shooting sport from the others. I shot a sanctioned match this summer with another "big name" and he round dumped as well. its kind of sad to see the pros bend the rules like this. Its almost like the valedictorian cheating to keep their grades up.

for those of us uninitiated with the term, would you kindly explain?
    What is "round dumping"?
Why is it a violation of the rules?
How would it vary from or compare to a real-life shooting situations?

He fired 3 shots at the 5th target making his gun go to slide lock. The stage only called for two on each target. The extra round "round dumping" allowed him to do that. IDPA is not intended to act as training for self defense, its just a game. IDPA's governing when and where reloads can take place is one of the few things that make it different from other shooting sports. A lot of the pros round dump and dont get called on it. It should be a procedural (3 second penalty) or an FTDR.

    From the IDPA Rule book:
PC 1. Failure To Do Right (FTDR):
    A. Adds twenty (20) seconds to total score.
    B. Is assessed for any attempt to circumvent or compromise
the spirit or rationale of any stage by the use of
    inappropriate devices, equipment or techniques.

    D. Examples: (Non-inclusive list)
    1. Firing extra rounds so that you may reload at a more
    convenient time.

This is why i heart USPSA ... just kidding. I want to try IDPA but I have been spoiled by uspsa so many rules in IDPA. I wish i would of started in IDPA and then went to USPSA. Back on point, I too have seen some more than questionable actions by some seasoned / pro shooters in USPSA and 3gun matchs.

so does idpa stipulate you must reload from slide lock only? he could have reloaded with one in the chamber between stations and been ready to go. if you can only reload from slide lock it makes sense that he dumped the last round to get a reload on the move instead of one and reload.

In response to the bold: I wish IDPA shooters realized that.

sorry, but i would argue that's not round dumping. He is shooting at a moving target, maybe he's trying to make up a non A hit to save his score?

I shot IDPA for years before switching over to the dark side and shooting USPSA and 3 gun. Though IDPA training did help when I shot in 6" of mud and wanted to catch my empty mags during a change

seriously, they are both games. Play by the rules of that game

IDPA does not stipulate slidelock only.....you can do a "Tactical Reload"....you must retain the mag with live ammo in it. All reloads must be done from cover when it is available, so you can't leave cover and reload while moving to another position.

I dunno. When I shoot IDPA I usually dump lots of rounds into moving targets to be sure; however, that stage had a lot of moving targets that he only shot twice. On the other hand he shot the steel twice. Is that "round dumping"?

I should make my sig FTDR FTW!

It's a game, people will game them... that's the idea.

If you're not pushing the limits of whats legal in the game, you're not going to be able to keep up.

He has crushed it for a while now in IDPA... I think he knows how to play the game.
