Status check follow up question
I have shot handgus, at the range, for about 30 years. I just recently started to carry an autoloader. Chambering a round in the house scares the hell out of me. I have never had a discharge at the range when doing this, but the range has a backstop. Does anyone use special precautions when doing this? I was thinking of pointing the muzzle into a five gallon bucket of sand, or am I being silly?

I usually just point it at the floor and rack the slide. I guess accidents are possoble, but if you finger remains off the trigger, then you should be okay.

I don't have the same fear as you do, but they don't make things like this for nothing...

I don't think that if the sand makes you feel better, it is rediculous. Do what you are comfy with.

That's an interesting device. If it's capable of stopping a bullet it's a good, or maybe even great device. What it is effectively doing is getting you to consciously point your gun in a direction that you consider to be safe while you are loading or unloading it.
I always take care to make sure mine are pointed in the safest possible direction at the time, just in case the unexpected actually happens. If having a designated safety device makes you feel that much better, then go ahead and use one. If you can identify a safe direction and always point your gun accordingly while loading or unloading, and keep your digits clear of the trigger, that should be more than good enough.
Proper handling practices shouldn't require backup devices.

It's not a bad idea to have a safe area to point your pistol when you chamber a round. However your trigger finger along the side of the frame is the best bet.

Re: Status check follow up question
The unacceptable number of unintentional discharges, serious injuries and fatalities involving police, law enforcement and security officers during administrative loading and unloading of firearms can be prevented by adopting a combination of appropriate training in safe firearm handling, and the purchase of a firearm clearing system.
The above quote from the site mentioned. Basically says the so-called professionials don't know what they're doing, yes?

After reading the replies (thanks!), I realized this goes back to bullseye shooting. Some of the guys had "trigger work" on their 1911's, and occasionally the hammer would follow the slide and go bang.
The little that I would carry in the past, I carried a wheelgun. I am now carrying a Kahr, no hammer. I guess with more use, I'll get over it.I vote the second first
