Choke Question
I was looking at another shotgun which is a remington 870 deer gun 12GA.
What do they mean by modified choke? How many yards will it be able to shoot up to with it?

Re: Choke Question
It goes like this
percentage of shot inside a 30" circle.
yards 20 30 40
Cylinder 80% 60% 40%
Skeet 92% 72% 50%
Improved Cylinder 100% 77% 55%
Modified 100% 83% 60%
Improved Modified 100% 91% 65%
Full 100% 100% 70%
there's also extra-full turkey chokes and such. And it all depends on your gun and your load. trial and error is the best way to figute out what works best for you.

Re: Choke Question
Also is it a fixed choke or removable? What do you want to do with it? If it's threaded you can change them to whatever you want (way more versitile) If it's a fixed choke you might want to look for something different.
modified would be great for clay pigeons, or small game. But if you want to hunt turkeys I wouldn't recomend it.

Re: Choke Question
He wants to use it for a deer gun. Depending on what kind of slugs you want to use, will dictate what barrel you want to use. You may want a "rifled" shotgun barrel, or you might just want to shoot rifled slugs. I don't really shoot slugs in shotguns, so maybe someone else who does shoot slugs can help.

Re: Choke Question
Hawk, the "choke" doesn't really choke the slug, but I'm sure it can make a difference. I know that some slugs are made to be shot through a smoothbore and can be shot with the choke on or if you'd need to switch to a cylinder or skeet. I'm not sure if there are some slugs that aren't supposed to be shot through a choked barrel. I also know that some slugs work better in a barrel that is rifled, like say sabot slugs. Maybe some people that are more familiar with shooting slugs will chime in in a few.

Re: Choke Question
modified choke should be really good for slugs. I have shot them through most chokes and out to about 50 yards I haven't seen a whole lot of improvement. modified should make a good deer gun, and deadly on the clay pigeons as well.

Re: Choke Question
The Rem 870 is (or at least was) available as a Combo. You get a smoot bore and a rifled bbl that has fixed iron sights. It's a good deal, especially if you're planning on using it as a slug-gun. I don't have a lot of experience shooting rifled-slugs through a smoothbore, but the rifled barrel works very nice with smooth slugs. It's been awhile since I've used the slug bbl, but I believe it's set up for mounting scope rings also...
