Default Good safety/pistol shooting DVD for real Newbies?

I've been told that trying to teach new shooters, especially family/friends/significant others is best left to professionals. However, talking people into shelling out for professional training is easier said than done.

Is there a DVD training video that might do the job, in addition to some supervised live fire?

I'm sure the Magpul Pistol DVD set is very good, but it looks way too advanced for someone who's never touched a real firearm, and may actually do more harm than good.

Nothing beats a hands on experience/training. DVD can supplement, but actually starting should be done in person.

I've taught many new shooters in and around the Philadelphia area, most of the time for free, and will be happy to do the same for whoever needed. They just need to come to Philly (SPAG), pay for their range fees and the ammo they shoot, I'll find the time. I'm NRA-certified in Home Firearm Safety & Pistol Shooting if that makes any difference (I've taught many people well before the certification). PM me if you want to take up the offer.

The problem with firearm "training" DVD's is that you pretty much have to have the principles down pat before you can get anything from them. Without having a set of core principles already ingrained, one cannot accurately assess what has value for you and what does not.

As such, there is no such thing as a DVD for newbies.

Unless one is already grounded with formal training, "training DVD's" can, and often do, result in the watcher learning bad techniques or improperly performing otherwise good ones. This is where we run into the Dunning-Kruger Effect so prevalent on gun forums.

RSOs at Wicen's shpiel every new shooter on basic safety and observe them shooting very closely until they (RSOs) feel comfortable with new peoplee handling their guns on their own, so you might want to try that place if you don't want to spend $$$ on NRA class.

Better yet spend the money and get Metz!

I did and it was well worth the modest cost!

    Also a very good offer!

It's nice when the biggest issue a thread brings is trying to make sure you mention all the good resources easily available!

considering that i'm in the middle of becoming and nra instructor. i would not ever recommend a dvd. in person training is always best recommend but if your basic firearm safety fundamentals are good then you should be able to atleast get them started.

their are some really good video's on youtube but the problem comes when the student needs to ask questions.

It is old, and the video quality/style kinda shows it, but it is at the top of my list for quality of information.
My wife bought it for me a few years ago, and I watch a segment every month or so

This is a good one for new pistol shooters - It follows the NRA Basic Pistol class and price is reasonable
