Re: Allentown Police Academy
Something I've always wondered, do you need a lie detector test to become a cop?

Depends on the department that's hiring you.

Re: Allentown Police Academy
i am also looking to go to the Allentown academy in July. I am a recent college grad and still trying to figure out the process of applying and entering the academy. Would the first step be submitting the application along with my drivers license, transcripts and background check? i would think i would be informed by the academy what would come next. I want to be as prepared as i can be and, as of right now, i feel in the dark.

Re: Allentown Police Academy
If you really want to become a police officer, you sort of have two options. First you can test for a department that will pay your way through the academy and give you a 40 hour a week check at the same time.... or you can pay your own way through. I graduated from the Allentown academy about 16 years ago, so much has changed since then, including the cost of tuition, which has increased.
I recommend testing for a bigger department (that can afford to send you through the academy). Having to quit my job and live off my wife's paycheck and pay my own medical insurance while going through it was tough...thank goodness I had insurance, because I broke the heck out of one of my fingers practicing defensive tactics with a former DT trainer. Anyway...that was the way I had to do it.
Take as many tests as you can and try to score your very best on written exams. If you served in the military, Veterans points will give you 10 points on your final score when it comes to the hiring process.
Smaller department will not have the money to send you through the academy, so consider that when looking over applications.
