Default 308 load for Rem 700

I am looking for a good starting point from anyone who is handloading for a 20" 1:12 twist barrel 308 Win.

I have a Remington carbine that likes the Sierra 165 SPBT over IMR 4064.

I have them loaded to a good pressure and velocity, not excessive, but the primers demonstrate a small flattening. It's been so long since I've fired them over the chrono, I can't remember what they were, but 1-1/4" at 100 yds seemed "minute of bambi" to me. .

I have a 22" 12 twist Remington and it really likes the Hornady Superformance 150 SST's. They are rated at 3000fps, but chrono'd at 2890 out of my shorter barrel. I also have a 26" 11-1/4" twist that liked the 175SMK's over Varget. I loaded 43.1 grains and got 2619fps. Your velocity would be significantly lower. Alot of folks I know use Varget for .308.

I have heard good things about Varget, but currently have some IMR4895 to burn through. Varget looks to be a tad slower burning than the IMR. My idea is to start with a 168gr and work around that for a few months. Thanks.

I have IMR4895 also. I tried it a little before switching to Varget. Varget's temperature insensitivity is supposed to be better. Here in Mississippi we go from 30's in the winter to 100's in the summer.

I have a 700 LTR 20" that i have turned into a hunting rifle and it absolutely loves 165 grain accubonds over 44.5 grains of Varget! It will shoot 1/2" all day long with this load.
