    Default Good, mass-produced 1911 under $800?

Been looking at the Ruger SR1911. Would that be a good pick up, or are there better options?

New to this whole 1911 game, and can't wait to get going.

You can't go wrong with one of these. It's probably one of the better "low end", US made 1911's on the market right now.

    Ruger SR1911

I think street price is somewhere around $650, give or take a few.

I love my RIA M1911A1 $475 it reminds me a great deal of the one I carried in the service except it doesn't rattle and I can actually hit things with it

Dealer on a new bare bones Colt is around 775.00-
For just a little more than your budgeted range, you could have the original.

I have a Ruger SR1911 it is made pretty solid all metal parts and pretty accurate. For the money it's a pretty decent 1911 SS, decent sights made with quality parts right here in the US of America. Its not on par with a Series E S&W or Dan Wesson valor, but for the money its a very good 1911.

There is nothing I want to add to it.

My near $400 Colt was bare bone took another $450 to get it were I like shooting it and that was 1980s money.

I will defer you to a thread of on Maryland Shooters forum. This is from a very trusted and experienced gunsmith on the forum. Another forum member asked the same question you did and this was his response...

Budget based (Under 1K #1 best, #5 least best)

#1 Smith and Wesson 1911 (Some models are more expensive)
    #2 Ruger 1911
    #3 American Classic 1911
    #4 Taurus 1911
    #5 RIA Tactical 1911

Dan Wessons and STI's are also nice but are over 1K most of the time. I consider an STI more of a race geared gun.

Best will be a full costom job and exceed 3K. For production units that are the best I suggest Wilson Combat, Nighthawk, Ed Brown, Les Baer.

Best base gun that holds its value and is an outstanding custom base gun is a Colt. Norincos are a good build base too but dont retain their value.

I have far too little expreience with the Current Remington 1911's to make any comments.

The ruger sounds good for the price and you can also look for a Springfield Loaded model. Personally, I would go for a RIA Tactical model and spend the rest on magazines and ammo.

Para-Ord Not bad mostly 14 shot dbl stacked but they do make single stack mag guns usually a pretty good buy the dbl stack mags can be expensive. Like most 1911 you can go or do anything with it from home protector to Race gun. They have there own Race gun team.

Kimber - Gaining there reputation back. They seem to be back on track to making quality 1911 again. I credit them for offering modified 1911s with near custom features. There was a time when a bare bone 1911 was crude. I own a Custom II (basic Kimber from the 80s) its a fine 1911 even by today standards. A Kimber can be anything you want it to be.

Springfield Armory - This is great base for Race gun (they have there own team) or any type of 1911 you want. The SA has always made quality fire arms there 1911s are no different. They have had some problems with triggers not being the smoothest. but usually a SA 1911 is a fine pistol.

SIG - Is not a classic 1911 its a new design (along with S&W) with ejector on the outside. It is made with quality material and is accurate. Its made a little different then most 1911s externally. But its a fine Sig version of a 1911.

Caspian - An old classic Usually this is the base of a Race Gun or a highly Customized 1911. I have never seen a bare bone one (unless just a unfinished frame and slide). They have alwaya been dressed to kill or dressed out customized or winning RACE guns.

The guns that I have question about are the Citadels, ATIs, American Tis, Taurus PT1911 and Sams some of them really look good.

Under 800 and the STI spartan is within your price range and defiantly a good buy from a company with a great reputation.

+3 (I think) for RIA. I love mine, although I am not a 1911 conasuer by any means.

+2 for STI Spartan. If I am correct, the two share their frame from a common source in the Phillipines.

Good luck out there, alot of semingly great choices under $800........
