If law enforcement has the serial number of a firearm used in a crime they would have that firearm in evidence. In my opinion the only way they could tell if that firearm was used in a crime would be to match bullets. And they would tell when you bought the firearm due to the transfer papers which are dated.

I would think they'd run them through NCIC data base for stolen. Would hate to be surprised when I got stopped and the LEO runs the numbers and finds out the gun was used in a hit or robbery.

The police could have the serial number but not the gun if it was reported stolen or lost/missing and the owner filed a police report and gave them the s/n. Or, It could have been a burglary at a gun shop and the FFL gave them all the s/n's of the guns that were stolen.

A FFL (regular gunshop) is not obligated to check any used guns they buy from someone (I would if I didn't know the person selling it). A FFL (pawnshop) IIRC IS required to have it checked to insure it is not on the stolen/lost/missing list. If a person is selling a gun to a FFL and the FFL wants to check to insure that it is not stolen, etc. and the person selling balks at this, I would be very careful/suspicious of this buy.

Also, when a FFL receives a gun, the name, address, etc. of the seller is recorded in the FFL's Acquisition/Disposition Log (as long as the FFL is doing everything legal).

    Glockfan,
