Any S&W 500 Owners Out There?

Got a craving for a big bore, shot a S&W 500 recently and fell in love. The only thing that's kept me from buying one is between the 4" and the 8 3/8". At my local gun store, the gentleman behind the counter informed me that you can't shoot cast bullets out of the 8 3/8" because the one they had wasn't ported. What type of ammunition is appropriate to shoot in either one of these models?

you don't want to fire a SW 500 without a muzzle break. i've owned a 500 since they first hit the market several years ago and between the muzzle break and weight recoil is very manageable. the higher the grain the more felt recoil and from what i recall you can shoot cast bullets but i'd have to go and check the owners manual to be sure. the 500 is not cheap to shoot and while recoil is manageable it's still not the type of gun you go to the range and shoot 100 rds.

magnum research produces the BFR revolver that is chambered in 450 marlin, 45/70, SW 500, .410 and several other large heavy hitting calibers so you may want to check one of them out also before buying the smith.

I have an 8 3/8" ported, absolutely love it. The porting is interchangable so you can shoot jacketed or cast bullets, everything came with the gun. Not sure what the bullet restrictions are on the non ported models but my step dad has one and he only shoots cast out of his, no issues.

I have a 4in and shot jacketed and lead.you just have to change the brake thats all.crazywolf

I got the 8 3/8" with interchangeable ports. It's a absolute blast to shoot and the trigger is so smooth. I highly suggest reloading if you own one. Ammo can turn into a house payment if you shoot it on a regular basis. I shoot 350 grain Berry's plated FMJ for cheap plinking ammo loaded at about 1k FPS and Hornady 350 JHP running about 1650. Only thing I reccomend is the green fiber optic sight. I have the red and don't care for it.

i have the 8.375" with the fixed muzzle device.
it is head and shoulders above the 4" model.handles the recoil much better, and just much better to shoot heavy loads from.
i do nothing but fullhouse loads, like top of the chart and beyond. i have a 440grain hardcast gas checked load, that has no lead fouling at all, in the barrel/forcing cone or in the comp.
it is one of my favorite range guns.

so very right. i have got to the point where i only take 100 or so rounds with, otherwise i'll shoot every one i take with.

Thats one hell of a round your shooting out of it. So with the 8 3/4" fixed muzzle, i can shoot both cast and full jacket loads out of it?

yeap no problems.
that load is a 350grain xtp at 1800 ft/s.
