question about painting my rifle stock

I want to paint my synthetic rifle stock and wanted to know if I can just lightly scuff it then prime it and paint it with a regular Krylon type paint or is there a special paint and process ...

I did the scuff 'n spray.

I used Rustolium texture paint about 4 years ago without scuffing, still holding up well. I would sand out all mold lines though. I really like the texture, it makes a no slip surface.

You cant really see the texture and the color is subtile change from the origional color of the stock but there are other colors.
