Proven AR 15 loads for long distance.
Proven AR 15 loads for long distance. I hear that reloading is one of the keys to long distance shooting for most rifles. What are some of your proven recipes for the pills you shoot. Factory or off the Press and out of what type twist rifling. My present barrel twist is factory 1:9, What is the best twist for a 20" SS varmint barrel for the .556?

Re: Proven AR 15 loads for long distance.
Service rifle slow fire is shot at 600 yards. The AR loads tend to 75-77-80 grain bullets with the 80 grainers having the best rep for accuracy at that distance (they must be single loaded as they will not fit into the magazine). Rifling twist rate to stabilize those long bullets is preferred at 1-7" though some shooters get away with 1-8". Two popular powders are Varget and Reloader 15 (among others) at 24 grains. Velocity between 2600 - 2700 fps. The higher vel preferred.

Hornady 75 gr Amax ,24 grs of RE15, 20" 1:8 , That bullet may or may not work for your barrel. Ive seen them shot from a 1:9 Savage bolt gun and were stable at 500 yds.

Re: Proven AR 15 loads for long distance.
I would go buy several brands of 223 meant for varminters and try them since those ammunitions are meant for long range shots at groundhogs, prairie dogs etc. They may or may not work in the rifle twist of an AR though.

Re: Proven AR 15 loads for long distance.
All good ideas and loads that I'm cataloging for future use ( I haven't bought the upper yet but I'm looking) I do have two AR-15 M4s that one will make a conversion to Long range or Mini 30.
Keep those recipes coming. I'll buy some factory loads to try to luck upon a match. But reloading seems to be the way of really making a match.
Thanks in advance.
