Well... this sucks.

The VA shares medical information with state sgencies. If you take meds, have nighmares, tell the VA that you are yyper vigilant or any number of other things then they mark you as an issue and that can hurt you in the long run when applying for a License to carry.

Re: VA has denied gun rights to more than 100k veterans
"Military veterans whose Veterans Affairs benefits are managed on their behalf by appointed fiduciary trustees are deemed “mentally defective” and reported to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), a computerized database which prohibits them from purchasing firearms."
Judged "mentally defective" because a trustee is managing VA benefits?? That seems a bit arbitrary. Comments about "hyper vigilance", taking anti psychotic meds, and recurring nightmares involving violence... yes... signs of PTSD and probably should be considered. But VA benefits being managed by a trustee? I don't get that."I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Well Chivvalry, the thought is simple.
If you must have a fiduciary trustee, that means someone to watch over your money and expenses, you know stuff like making sure your bills are paid and the like. It is a little bit of a clue that you might not be competent. Of course there are differing reasons why a trusteeship or power of attorney might be needed having nothing to do with mental competence.
My beef here is some bureaucrat weenie (even if he is a VA Doctor) making the decision a judge should make in an open hearing with the Vet represented by legal counsel.

Medical history records from the VA should be sealed.
This abuse of veteran's rights is an insult to the people who fight to maintain our rights and freedom. It is also bad for Recruitment.
Even if a Veteran is suffering post combat stress and posses some risk.... we should be willing to accept that risk as the price of freedom.Last edited by tsafa; November 1st, 2011 at 09:56 AM.

I'm sure it doesn't help their cases that Napolitano believes all veterans are potential terrorists.

This restriction paints with a wide brush. It sounds to me that it will be challenged through court litigation. This VA policy may have tighter paramiters after the decision is handed down.
