Default Plastic guide rod in Sig 220?

I was just drooling over a Sig Sauer Elite 220 when I noticed the plastic guide rod. How long have they been using those? I verified my Sig (a 226) has metal and it does. What are the advantages of a plastic rod?

My Sig Pro 2022 came with plastic guide rod too - I assumed just a way SIG tried to save some money on lower priced models - I replaced mine with a ss one right away. Many told me plastic is fine, but it just didn't sit right with me. Sounds like they're using plastic on more models.

Weight savings, maybe. Glock has been using them for some time now. It is not your everyday plastic. The stuff is tough. Plastic guide rods do break, but it isn't very often. On that note, the metal one's break, at times. I know the P220 Elite comes with one. I am getting it, anyway, and do not plan on changing it.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Beretta also now uses plastic rods.

If a manufacturer can save a buck on every pistol they make, that's a huge savings.
Not saying it's right or wrong, but they must think it's decent enough in quality to use them.

Upgrade to a steel one and forget about it, and replacing one part in a SIG is better than replacing 20 in a 1911..

The plastic guide rod in my 226 hasn't broke yet. About 2000 rounds through and still looks good as new.

My plastic rod in my Walther P99 is still going just fine. I've owned it since 2006 or 2007.

I had asked the guy at my local shop the same question, according to him the claim is it cuts down on friction therefore reducing slide recoil and cyclical rate. BTW I believe Glock's gen4 pistols actually have a 2 piece rod, claiming it reduces both even further.

My P220 Equinox came with one too, but thanks to Steve Bedair it has a nice stainless one.

Plastic guide rods have shown up in the P220, in my experience, about 10-11yrs ago. I have many P220's made around 2000-2002 and some came with a plastic guide rod, some metal. No real indications as to why some had polymer and some metal. My highest round count P220 is just at 10k with no issues with the plastic rod. A similar P220 with 4500rnds on it, and a metal guide rod, has some peening issues at the base of the rod where it seats on the barrel lug. Replaced with a polymer rod. Otherwise I can see no real performance differences between the two. In many cases, people make way too big of a deal over the polymer vs. metal guide rod thing...
